Discover the story: Open day in the Meißner tram depot!

Jaspisstraße 11, 01662 Meißen, Deutschland - On June 21, there will be a special event in Meißen. The first "open day" of the Meißen section of the Saxon Railway History (ISEG) initiative invites everyone interested to immerse themselves deeply into the history of the trams. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the tram depot at Jaspisstraße 11 opens its gates. Here, visitors can admire original vehicles and relics of the Meißner tram and the narrow-gauge railway history. The event is not only a look back, but also a celebration of the regional traffic history.

The Meißen tram was active for passenger transport from 1899 to 1936 and until 1968 for freight transport and is an important part of the city's cultural heritage. At the opening on December 16, 1899, 2,700 passengers were welcomed, which laid the foundation stone for a popular means of transport. With a total route of 4.6 kilometers, which led from the state station to the end station at the Buschbad, the tram was also lovingly called the "spark of sparks", since it brought people through the city, especially in its early days. Over the decades, the tram experienced a number of heights and depths, the passenger traffic was finally replaced by buses in 1936.

important exhibitions and attractions

Visitors to the "Open Day" can look forward to exciting exhibitions. A number of historical vehicles are presented at the various stands, including Güter-Ellok No. 3 as a loan from the Dresden Verkehrsmuseum as well as two freight cars and two meter-lane roller bones. The four-axle 750 mm luggage car 974-359 is particularly noteworthy. These exhibits offer a unique insight into the past and the development of public transport in the region.

A very special experience awaits the small and large fans of historical traffic: a classic car of the H6B type will commute and conveniently transport the guests between different points. The stops are the Meißen Busbahnhof next to the DB train station, the Buschbad and the former tram depot in the Triebischtal. Entry to the event is free, donations are welcome to support the continuation of such projects.

A look back at the history of the tram

The tram history in Meißen is not only important for the city. From the first opening road to the decommissioning of freight traffic after the Second World War, the means of transport has taken a distinctive place in the hearts of the citizens over the decades. The roller goat, which made transport between different tracks possible, was an innovative solution that inspired other cities. The takeover of the tram by the city of Meißen in 1917 also shows how important local public transport was for the urban infrastructure.

With these historical backgrounds, the "Open Day" not only becomes a shop window into the past, but also a way to rekindle the fascination for rail history.
