Commemoration in Radebeul: Stolpersteine remember Holocaust victims
There will soon be a call to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust in Radebeul. Next Monday, Thomas Berndt, together with the mayor, invites you to an event that will take place at a symbolic location: the Landesbühnen Sachsen. The Radebeul city administration organized this moving initiative, which has become increasingly important in recent years. After all, a total of 12 stumbling blocks have been laid in six different locations in Radebeul since 2005. These small memorial stones are not only an important part of the culture of remembrance, but also a sign of visibility for the persecuted and murdered people of Jewish faith.
This year the commemoration is taking place on the anniversary of the Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938. This is a date that is inextricably linked to the reign of terror of the Nazis, who from 1941 carried out the cruel genocide of European Jews, also known as the Holocaust or Shoah. This occurred as part of a massive, systematic crime in which around six million Jews lost their lives. Many other civilians were also affected by the Nazi persecutions, and the Nazi ideology was based on racism, which led to one of the darkest chapters in human history. To this day, the Holocaust is considered the greatest crime against humanity, and commemorating it remains a central task for society.
Common commemoration and remembrance
The memorial gathering will take place at 1:30 p.m. in front of the stumbling block for Ida Schaye, which was only moved in June 2024. Participants have the opportunity to clean this stone together and lay flowers. Not only representatives of the Saxony State Theaters will be there, but also students from Radebeul schools. This active involvement of young people in the culture of remembrance is of great importance as it helps to keep memories alive and strengthen historical awareness. It is important that future generations are informed about the atrocities in order to prevent such crimes from happening again.
The last two years have been particularly active for Radebeul in this regard. New stumbling blocks were laid in various parts of the city, bearing the names and stories of those people whose lives were ended by the systematic persecution of the Nazis. These memorial stones not only represent the pain and suffering of the victims, but also the hope for a better future in which tolerance and respect for all people are paramount.
The memorial event in Radebeul is an important step in keeping the memory of the horrors of the Holocaust alive. Even if the wounds of history are deep, the commitment of the city and its citizens shows that the lessons of the past must not be forgotten.
“A good hand for the culture of remembrance” is clearly evident here. Radebeul, with its commitment to remembrance and education, sets an example for other cities and people. Remembrance must not be forgotten - it lives through the actions and commitment of its citizens.
For those interested in learning more about the Holocaust, there is much to read and learn. The Holocaust left deep scars and shows how important it is to know and understand history. If you want to find out more about the background and history, you can take a look at the extensive sources of information, such as the Wikipedia page, which offers a lot of valuable information about this dark part of history. Among other things, they also report on the different phases of the genocide and the cruel structures that underpinned the murders.
In Radebeul, commemoration is not only associated with sadness, but also with hope - for a future without hatred and exclusion.
We invite all interested citizens to take part in the commemoration event and to set an example for the past and the future.
