Major operation in Gohrischheide: forest fire threatens the region!
A forest fire broke out today in Gohrischheide, more precisely in the Meißen district, which is posing major challenges for the fire department. This dangerous incident occurred in the early afternoon on the site of a former military training area, not far from an explosive ordnance disposal service blast site. The area covered by the flames measures an impressive 700 by 700 meters and immediately creates an intense atmosphere of alarm in the region.
The extinguishing work is extremely difficult because the firefighters are forced to maintain a safety distance of 1,000 meters from the fire site due to the ammunition-laden environment. This makes it almost impossible to carry out effective extinguishing measures directly on site. As the Zeithain volunteer fire department reports, the emergency services will probably be busy extinguishing the fire into the night and beyond. Although the fire is expected to calm down overnight, the measures must be expected to continue the next day. The fire is currently spreading to the south and west, with firefighters looking at both harvested fields and a large forest area that could be at risk if it spreads further. Radio Dresden reports that…
Smoke and explosions
The public can only become even more worried when they observe the large cloud of smoke between Zeithain and Mühlberg on the Elbe. The fire department also heard detonations that indicate the area was contaminated with ammunition. Despite the tense situation, according to a warning from the municipality of Zeithain, there is no acute danger to the population. As a precautionary measure, it is recommended to keep windows and doors closed and to turn off ventilation and air conditioning. MDR informs that...
A remarkable operational style is emerging: a total of eight local fire departments from Zeithain as well as the Meißen district's forest fire disaster relief team are in action. Support also comes from other fire departments in the area, the Technical Relief Agency (THW) and a unit from Brandenburg. The explosive ordnance disposal service is also on site and advises the emergency services on the necessary distances. Protecting our forests is also a significant concern, according to federal data.
Looking back at previous forest fires
This region has struggled with forest fires in the past. In June 2022, the largest forest fire in Saxony in 30 years occurred here, causing enormous damage amounting to millions. Arson was considered the suspected cause at the time. But it's not just the Gohrischheide that is affected; Forest fire data has been collected nationwide since the 1970s in order to get a handle on the size of the area, the causes and the associated losses. Especially in Germany, where the population density is quite high, the protection and preservation of the forest plays a central role. The statistical data published there is intended to help reduce the number and size of forest fires in the future.
The fire service and all support units face a challenging night, while the public is urged to remain vigilant and take the advice given seriously. The situation will continue to be monitored closely and the progress of the fire-fighting work will be reported regularly.
