Großenhain rises: Saxon Hiking Day 2026 in view!

The 14th Saxon Hiking Day recently took place in Jonsdorf in the picturesque Zittau Mountains, and the rush was huge. From big to small, numerous hiking enthusiasts gathered on June 13th and 14th, 2025 to experience nature in its full splendor. Diesachsen reports that a total of 23 guided and individual tours, with distances between 1 and 20 kilometers, were offered to participants. This included over 200 students who took part in the school hike day on Friday.

Particularly noteworthy was the “Wandering Workshop” forum that took place as part of the event. Experts came together here to discuss current trends and strategies in hiking tourism. Saxon hiking day emphasizes that the event is not only intended for experienced hikers, but also for families, and the warm welcome from the mayor of Jonsdorf, Kati Wenzel, underlined this.

Großenhain and the future of the hiking day

Another highlight was the announcement of Großenhain as the host of the 15th Saxon Hiking Day, which will take place from May 29th to 31st, 2026. Diesachsen reports that Mayor Sven Mißbach was able to accept the symbolic baton from Mayor Kati Wenzel. Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer was also there and emphasized the essential role of hiking for tourism in rural areas and togetherness.

The implementation of the Saxon Hiking Day has been coordinated by the Saxon State Board of Trustees for Rural Areas since 2009. This not only strengthens the importance of hiking tourism in Saxony, but also promotes the development and maintenance of quality hiking trails in the region. As on the website of the SLK Miltitz can be read, hiking tourism plays a central role in the economic development of rural communities and offers a platform to present regional products and services.

A look ahead

Hiking is very popular in Germany, and the challenges in competing with other hiking regions are clear. The “Hiking Tourism in Saxony” coordination group is committed to ensuring the quality of hiking trails and networking projects in a meaningful way. SLK Miltitz highlights that the quality of trails is a priority for hikers, while trends such as sustainability and environmental protection are increasingly coming into focus.

At the Saxon Hiking Day, not only hiking incidents, but also the exhibitors and sponsors received a lot of recognition. The support of local helpers was crucial to the success of the event. We are now looking forward to the day of hiking in Großenhain and the diverse possibilities that this region has to offer.
