Radebeul plans first bicycle road: traffic safety for students increased!
In Radebeul something is happening in terms of bicycle infrastructure! As the Sächsische Zeitung, the city council has decided to officially declared the city's first bicycle road. This step is no coincidence, because the results of the ADFC bicycle climate test show that more than three quarters of the cyclists surveyed in Radebeul feel unsafe during their trips.
Over 54 percent of the 142 respondents stated that cycling on road traffic was stressful. A fact that City Councilor Angelika does not leave (Die Linke) uncommented: she appeals to drivers to show more patience with cyclists. FDP City Councilor Volkmar Kunze also sums it up by mentioning cases of cyclists who disregard the traffic rules-situations that he experienced himself.
from vision to reality
Pestalozzistraße, an important connection between the Lößnitzgymnasium and two daycare centers, will now be given priority for cyclists at the crossings. Cars can continue to drive in both directions, but must limit the speed to 30 km/h. This is done with regard to the safety of the students, since the Pestalozzi and Wasastraße intersection is considered the focus of the accident. Another incentive to revitalize the road: Young cyclists already use them unofficially and have priority over the automotive road users.
The project is estimated at 536,000 euros, and it is gratifying that up to 60 percent of the costs can be covered by funding. Mayor Jörg Müller also announced that rapid implementation should be advised, depending on the availability of these funds. The plans also provide to widen the sidewalk from 1.70 m to 2.20 m and to narrow the road - a measure that does not come up with all the undivided consent.
The opinions are split
While the AfD faction does not see any need for action and describes the road as calm, there are different opinions within the CDU city council group. Regardless of this, the ADFC bicycle climate test, which was carried out from September to November 2024, shows that satisfaction among cyclists: inside in Germany is of crucial importance. The results are available on the ADFC website and offer both traffic planners: inside and political responsible persons.
It can therefore be seen that the new measures in Radebeul want to make a positive contribution to improving the cycling climate. Now it is up to the city councilors and the road users to pull together together to achieve this goal.
