Saxony relies on hydrogen: key to the energy transition or an illusion?
A lot is happening in Saxony when it comes to hydrogen: Energy and Economics Minister Dirk Panter presented the second implementation report for the Saxon hydrogen strategy last Tuesday. Saxony is moving with enthusiasm to develop and establish the hydrogen value chain in the market, which is not only important for the regional economy, but can also make an important contribution to the energy transition. Since this strategy was first presented in January 2022, numerous measures have been initiated and implemented to establish hydrogen technology as a central element of future energy supply. diesachsen.de reports that the switch to sustainable energy sources is now particularly urgently needed - not only because of climate change, but also because of geopolitical challenges.
A clear plan is emerging: In October 2024, the national hydrogen core network in Germany was approved, which is expected to reach a length of over 9,000 kilometers by 2032. In the first expansion stage, important Saxon economic regions such as Dresden, Leipzig, Zwickau and the Meißen industrial area will be connected. A first section of the core network is scheduled to go into operation in spring 2025. But despite these ambitious plans, there is a challenge: the core network will currently not be able to guarantee comprehensive connectivity to all regions. The state government is therefore strongly committed to planning security in all parts of Saxony.
Hydrogen as the key to the energy transition
Hydrogen has the potential to replace fossil fuels in many areas. Hydrogen can help solve energy problems, particularly in industry and the mobility sector. The federal government has created a clear framework for action with the National Hydrogen Strategy (NWS): This strategy aims to increase the production capacity for green hydrogen to at least 10 gigawatts by 2030 and to build a starting network with over 1,800 kilometers of hydrogen pipelines by 2028. Switching to hydrogen not only ensures the competitiveness of German companies; it also makes a decisive contribution to achieving climate goals.
However, hydrogen as an energy source is not the universal solution. Some applications are better suited to this than others. In some areas, particularly in long-term operation and energy storage, it makes sense to consider alternative energy sources. deutschland.de adds that a combination of different energy sources is required to successfully master the challenges of the energy transition.
Cooperation and innovation in focus
Saxony is proving to be an innovative location for hydrogen technologies. The new Hydrogen Innovation Center (HIC) in Chemnitz, funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and the Saxon Ministry of Economic Affairs, will develop as one of four national innovation and technology centers. Here, research institutions, companies and the public sector work hand in hand to find creative solutions and further advance hydrogen technology.
It is a time of change in which Saxony is well positioned. If the hydrogen strategy is implemented correctly, it could both strengthen the regional economy and make a decisive contribution to climate protection. It remains exciting to see what developments the coming years will bring.
