Show solidarity: Diaspora Sunday supports Klara's kitchen in Hamburg
What is actually on the agenda of the Catholic community in Germany? OnNovember 16, 2025is this year'sDiaspora Sundayan important day on which Catholics show their solidarity with brothers and sisters in minority situations. The goal is to raise donations for the Bonifatiuswerk to collect that is committed to various diaspora regions.
Diaspora Sunday is the highlight of this year's eventDiaspora action, which onNovember 9, 2025in theCologne cathedralwas ceremoniously opened. Here is particularly the project “Klara's kitchen" should be mentioned in Hamburg, which offers those in need not only warm meals, but also food and clothing at symbolic prices. The Bonifatiuswerk supports around 1,000 such projects every year and has a budget of11 million eurosprovided.
A look at “Klara’s Kitchen”
Behind “Klara’s Kitchen” isSr. Klarissa Watermann OP, who and her team take care of poor and needy people. Once a month there is a large distribution in three communities where they offer fresh food, warm soups and drinks. Anyone who wants can take a bag full of food with them for just one euro, without having to receive benefits such as citizen's benefit in order to be welcome.
Interpersonal communication is particularly important to operators. “Klara’s Kitchen” is not just about eating, but also about the feeling of community. Visitors have the opportunity to sit down for two hours to exchange ideas and make new contacts. There is also a breakfast offer on Thursday, which offers space for life stories, and a consultation hour on Tuesday, where people are listened to for longer.
“Klara’s Kitchen” is financed exclusively through donations, and there are numerous supporters, such as“Food saver”and local initiatives that provide non-perishable food and cakes. In addition, baskets for non-perishable food are placed in the communities to make collection easier.
Major projects of the Bonifatiuswerk
The Bonifatiuswerk, which supports “Klara’s Kitchen”, is also active in many other projects. Current major projects include:Extension of the Carmelite monasteryin Hafnarfjördur, Iceland, and theNew church building“Holy Cross” in Selfoss, with a total cost of over3.6 million euros. The Bonifatiuswerk has already provided 437,000 euros of this. Such projects are part of the comprehensive support that the Bonifatiuswerk offers in the areas of construction, transport, faith and child and youth welfare.
This year's diaspora campaign with the motto:“Strengthen what supports you.”clearly shows the willingness and will to stand together and support each other in difficult times. The Bonifatiuswerk not only provides material support, but also promotes community and exchange between people. Here in Cologne and far beyond it is clear: we are strong together.
Next week, Diaspora Sunday will once again highlight the importance of this solidarity and invites everyone to participate and donate. It is up to us to spread this spirit of support – whether in church or in everyday life.
