Pot holders as art: Premiere in Meißen impresses with over 400 exhibits!
There is reason to be happy in Meißen! The Himmlisch gallery opens a very special event with Saxony's first potholder show. Over 400 exhibits, from round to square to pot-shaped potholders, can be admired here. The variety of pieces ranges from single and multi-colored designs to creative motifs such as traffic light men, the traditional gingerbread house and even traffic signs. There is something for every taste here!
The exhibition was organized by the talented Meissen artist Christina Koenig was launched, which launched a call for participation in March. In the last few months, 70 women and one man have submitted their works from Meißen and the surrounding area. The exhibits come from various cities, including Riesa, Moritzburg, Radebeul and Großenhain. Particularly noteworthy: a sewn work comes from North Rhine-Westphalia, and artistic crochet works even found their way to Meißen from Switzerland.
A celebration of stories
What makes the show special are the stories behind each pot holder. One participant, Michaela Mayer, for example, used her grandmother's leftover fabric. Sara Engelman, the cultural advisor for the city of Meißen, describes the works as textile miniatures that all tell their own stories. This not only appeals to the creative part of the population, but also preserves cultural heritage and citizen participation.
Both the city of Meißen, which supports the exhibition financially, and the artist want to promote a dialogue about art and culture in public spaces. After all, art has the ability to bring people together and inspire, as can also be observed in numerous other projects. Many art projects aim to seek direct exchange with the population and to increase awareness of social issues, as is the case Kubi Online explained.
A lively meeting place
The potholder show can be seen until December 20, 2023. During opening hours on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the pot holders can be purchased for a donation - the proceeds go to the next exhibition, which deals with illustrated children's books from GDR times. A handicraft meeting is also planned under the direction of crochet expert Karin Kurth, with the aim of creating a community work of art for the 1100th anniversary of the city of Meißen. You can register for this meeting on 03521 4766776 or via email christina.koenig@t-online.de possible.
Overall, there is much more to this exhibition than just craftsmanship - it is a loving homage to old crafts, ensures social encounters and promotes local culture. A great opportunity for everyone who is looking for something special and is interested in art and tradition!
