Broadband expansion in Waldheim: Road closures announced until the end of August!
The streets in Waldheim will be very turbulent in the coming weeks, as there will be several closures as part of the broadband expansion. As the Saxon reported, the closure between Meinsberg and Ziegra was recently lifted on Friday morning. But that was just the beginning. From Monday things will get serious: Kriebsteiner Straße will be completely closed from house number 5 to Obermarkt - with the exception of regular traffic.
The work on Kriebsteiner Strasse is scheduled to continue until June 28th, and diversions are already being planned. The diversion takes place via Ehrenberg, Grünlichtenberg, Reichenbach and Massanei, so make sure you find an alternative route in good time!
Consequences of the construction work
After Kriebsteiner Straße, Hainichener Straße is on the list. There will be closures in sections between Hainichener Straße 26 to Schönberg 1 and 2, which will last until July 12th. The diversion also leads via Ehrenberg and Kriebethal. But that's not all! The road between Ziegra and Meinsberg will be completely closed again from July 1st to August 8th because a new bus stop is being built on Waldheimer Straße. This time the diversion takes place via Gebersbach and Ziegra.
At the same time, further work on broadband expansion at Döbelner Strasse 1 and Waldheimer Strasse 29a as well as up to the outskirts of town is due to take place until August 9th. These measures begin on July 14th and will last until August 9th. The aim here is to make the fast internet connection accessible to everyone, which ultimately promises to improve the digital infrastructure for the city of Waldheim.
Looking into the future
But it's not just in Waldheim that there's a lot of digging going on. In the long term, Germany is on the right track, with the goal of having nationwide fiber optic coverage by 2030. The leading telecommunications companies are in the process of driving forward the expansion and are receiving the Federal Government both financial and technical support. A so-called “Gigabit Funding 2.0” program supports areas where economic expansion is not possible, with applications being accepted as early as 2025. The municipalities and regional representatives are required to submit their projects using a catalog of criteria in order to apply for funding.
It remains to be hoped that despite the current construction work and closures, the pursuit of fast internet will continue to make progress. The ADAC Maps provides everyone on the road with a helpful real-time overview of traffic flow and disruptions, including information about construction sites along planned routes.
It is certainly advisable for residents and commuters to monitor the coming weeks closely to avoid possible delays. And remember: Where there is construction, that is where progress usually flows!
