An Italian transforms a ruin into an art and inclusion site!
What’s new at the “Centro Arte Monte Onore” cultural center in Ehrenberg? Pier Giorgio Furlan, who has been restoring the historic Ehrenberg manor and enlivening it with art with heart and dedication for 25 years, continues to focus on inclusion and art education for everyone. The native Italian moved to Germany in 1986 to work as an artist. Furlan's dream of restoring a castle took shape when he discovered the manor, which was run down at the time and looked like a ruin and a landfill. Thanks to his initiative and with the support of ABM staff, garbage was removed and the first buildings were renovated. Today, the property features an inspiring outdoor labyrinth surrounded by restored structures.
Furlan attaches great importance to including people with disabilities in his projects. His commitment is particularly remarkable: Since 2001, he has initiated theater projects in the Waldheim prison and worked with various social institutions, including the “Arche” in Waldheim, the Lebenshilfe Mittweida and a special needs school in Döbeln. By making costumes and masks, he also promotes the creative development of visually impaired people.
Various events in the cultural center
The next events in the cultural center are already just around the corner! On Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 6 p.m., there will be a special lecture and book launch entitled “Theater of My Life.” Furlan will present the life story of his artistic career from Venice to Berlin to Ehrenberg and present his new book in the form of a screenplay. The evening promises exciting insights into his beginnings, the founding of his first theater in Friuli and the multimedia projects that he implemented in Germany, especially after the political change in 1989.
You shouldn't miss the lecture by Dr. Wolfgang Schwabenicky on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at 3 p.m. He will shed light on the topic “The landscape between Frankenberg and Waldheim in the Middle Ages” and explain the development of the region in the Zschopautal.
Support for Furlan's projects
Pier Giorgio Furlan receives support for his valuable work from the community of Kriebstein and the Erzgebirge-Central Saxony cultural area. The latter supports its initiatives with 1,500 euros to further strengthen artistic work and inclusion in the theater sector. A new play entitled “Avventure nel Mondo – Adventure in the World” is already being planned for 2026.
Whether with great theater projects or interesting lectures, the cultural center “Centro Arte Monte Onore” in Ehrenberg shows how art, architecture and social responsibility can be interwoven.
