First organ concert in Freiberg Cathedral after the Second World War!
After a long dry spell, the time has finally come: On Thursday, July 3rd, the emotional evening music in Freiberg Cathedral is back and with a very special concert. At 7:30 p.m., violinist Margret Baumgartl and cathedral organist Albrecht Koch will play on the historic Silbermann organ and look back on a moving history. This series had its origins in 1945, when Arthur Eger, freshly returned from the front, conducted the first organ concert after the Second World War. At that time, around 3,000 visitors listened in the cathedral.
In this first evening music, which is now becoming a tradition again, the famous D minor Toccata by Johann Sebastian Bach will be heard, among other things. The program also includes two sonatas for violin and organ as well as two chorale preludes, which will be sung by the cathedral choir under the direction of Clemens Lucke. This event not only marks a return to the cathedral's richness of sound, but is also a reminder of the house's deep-rooted musical tradition.
A look back at tradition
Did you know that the Freiberg Evening Music has been an integral part of the cultural scene for over 60 years? As silbermann.org reports, they have been established without any major interruptions since 1944. These concerts not only connect history with the present; they are a popular meeting place for music lovers from near and far.
The concert series takes place every Thursday from May to October and brings top national and international artists to the Silbermann organs from 1714 and 1719. From the first event in May to the last in October, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the world of classical music.
Unique sounds and outstanding artists
These concerts often feature not only Silbermann organs, but also various instruments and vocal ensembles. For example, during a pre-Christmas evening music program, a program will be presented that includes northern German composers such as Heinrich Scheidemann and Dieterich Buxtehude. jpc.de emphasizes that the special importance of improvisation – for example when performing works that are inspired during the concert – also plays a key role.
The evening music category has its origins in the tradition of Lübeck's St. Mary's Church, where this form of gathering between music and the community began. The influence of Buxtehude and his students is unmistakable, and every performance in Freiberg brings the legacy of this great tradition back to the stage.
Tickets for the evening music are available for 10 euros (reduced 7 euros) in the cathedral shop, at ticket offices and online via Reservix. To ensure that all regulations are adhered to, it is advisable to secure your tickets in advance.
Be there and experience how Freiberg Cathedral breathes life back into music on this summer evening. The mix of historical sounds, outstanding artists and a wonderful atmosphere promises to be an unforgettable experience.
