Freiberg mayoral election: Who are the strong candidates?
There is great excitement in Freiberg: a new mayor will be elected on September 28, 2025. This election is particularly exciting because it marks the end of Sven Krüger's term of office, who is moving to the office of district administrator. But who will succeed him? Around 30,500 citizens have the opportunity to cast their vote, and the list of candidates is diverse.
The city has set up 25 voting districts and 12 postal voting districts in preparation for the election. Around 220 city employees and 90 volunteers are available to support the election organization. Election evening therefore also promises information in real time: the first election results are to be published on the city website from 7 p.m. Citizens can still cast their vote or apply for postal voting documents at the town hall's postal voting office, which is open on weekdays until September 26th. The opening times are:
- Montag: 9 bis 16 Uhr
- Dienstag: 9 bis 18 Uhr
- Mittwoch: 9 bis 12 Uhr
- Donnerstag: 9 bis 16 Uhr
- Freitag: 9 bis 12 Uhr
- Am 26. September: 9 bis 16 Uhr
The candidates in portrait
Interest in the election is high due to the challenges Freiberg faces. Five candidates presented their political goals in interviews:
All candidates emphasized how much they care about Freiberg and what personal connections they have to the city.
What remains to be done?
The election becomes even more important because Freiberg faces numerous challenges. As the current election results in the 2024 local council election show, there is a change in the political landscape. The local council has a total of 34 seats, 15 of which are reserved for women. With the AfD, which won 9 seats, followed by the CDU with 7 seats, and the Free Voters with 4 seats, there is also a broad horizon of experience here.
Public interest in the upcoming election could also mean that issues such as sustainable urban development and digitalization of administration come into focus. What happens after the election and what direction will the new leadership take? The citizens of Freiberg can look forward to these questions.
The city's development depends crucially on the election decision on September 28th, and if no candidate achieves an absolute majority, there will be a second round of voting on October 26th. Citizens are called upon to use their voice and actively participate in shaping their city. Especially in such challenging times, it becomes clear how important every voice is.
