Music school concert: Musical female power in Freiberg!

On November 15, 2025, Freiberg will be the venue for a special musical event. At 4:00 p.m., the equal opportunities officer of the Central Saxony district, in collaboration with the Central Saxony Music School, invites you to a concert in the municipal ballroom. Under the motto “Musical works by composers from all over the world”, young music students present a program that not only promises sounds worth listening to, but also focuses on the life stories and work of the musicians. Admission is free, which will certainly attract many music lovers.

The concert is part of a series of events that have been very well received in recent years. In recent years there have been concerts in Mittweida and Waldheim that also dealt with gender-appropriate music culture. This continuity in programming underlines the importance of initiative and cultural participation for the region.

Focus on gender equality

But the concept behind the concert is more than just musical performances. In recent years, the discussion about gender equality in the music industry has intensified. According to the MaLisa Foundation, an analysis shows that there has been little improvement in the gender balance among songwriters and on festival stages since 2010. Over 85% of the music in the German weekly charts is composed by men, while almost 16% women are represented on festival stages. So there is still a lot of work to be done to increase the visibility of women and non-binary people in music.

The MaLisa Foundation has researched this topic in cooperation with GEMA and other organizations and found that the proportion of women in registered songs has even decreased slightly. Smaller festivals in particular seem to show a positive trend, as they reach up to 29% female participation. Still, the decline in the larger categories is alarming.

Artistic diversity and challenges

In the music world, there are many influences that shape development, from traditional gender roles to structural disadvantages that can inhibit creative processes. The talented music students taking part in the upcoming concert show that the next generation is ready to take on these challenges and make a valuable contribution through their work.

This musical event will not only be a feast for the ears, but also a step in the right direction by shining a spotlight on female composers and their works. After the concert, one can only hope that enthusiasm for gender equality and the visibility of female artists continues to grow - both in Freiberg and beyond.
