District council decides on new ambulances and broadband expansion in Central Saxony!

On September 10, 2025, the district council of Central Saxony met and presented a variety of interesting topics that affect the region. The focus was on the procurement of new ambulances worth around 3.8 million euros. These new vehicles will be used at various locations and are intended to increase the safety of emergency services. The prospect of purchasing a heavy-duty rescue vehicle for around 400,000 euros was also announced. The fees for the emergency service will be adjusted from January 1, 2026. The importance of these measures was also reflected in the comprehensive analysis of the performance of the rescue service, which was carried out by the Federal Highway Research Institute was carried out, underlined.

Particular attention was paid to the planned broadband expansion. A total of 1,509 additional building connections are to be created here in Cluster B and Cluster I, supported by funds amounting to 7.768 million euros. These measures are crucial to improving the digital infrastructure in the region. The district administrator, Sven Krüger, also welcomed the new managing director of the Mittelsächsische Theater und Philharmonie gGmbH, Sergio Raonic Lukovic. Under his leadership, the facility recorded over 95,000 visitors last season, which is a record for 25 years.

Waste management and employment opportunities

Waste management services were also discussed at the meeting. From June 2026, there will be a Europe-wide tender for waste management in the district, with existing contracts ending on May 31, 2026. The tender is being carried out in five lots, including the collection of residual waste and problematic substances. The cost savings of around 6% compared to the current contracts represent significant progress. The administration has been informed of the most economical offers for each lot, signaling a commitment to efficient waste disposal.

Another topic of the meeting was the increase in job opportunities for asylum seekers, which will rise from 29 in 2022 to 53 in 2025. These additional opportunities should also include obligations to participate in the city of Lunzenau, which will promote the integration of refugees.

Medical scholarships and social support

In the field of healthcare, the policy for the medical scholarship has been updated and the application deadline has been extended to September 30th. This program supports medical students and will also be opened to dentistry from the winter semester 2026/27. In view of the financial challenges in the district, such as an additional requirement of 3.3 million euros for social benefits, new guidelines were also introduced that offer support to recipients of citizens' benefit and basic security in special life situations.

In summary, the district council is sticking to its course for the future. Whether it is about financial support for social institutions, digital connectivity or improving health care, the measures have the well-being of citizens in mind. There is a lot going on in the coming years, and the proud people of Cologne can look forward to the new season in the theater and well-thought-out waste management.
