Copper thieves strike again: 440 meters of cable stolen from Freiberg!

On Thursday, June 26, 2025, a disturbing incident occurred in the Central Saxony district. In Freiberg, a copper cable theft was discovered on Paul-Müller-Straße. Between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, unknown perpetrators tampered with an uninhabited apartment building and stole around 440 meters of copper cable in various sizes. Some of the cables had already been installed, which puts the damage at around 2000 euros Sächsische.de reported.

Unfortunately, such incidents are not isolated. It was only on the night from Wednesday to Thursday that there was another similar theft in Lower Saxony. Here, unknown perpetrators broke into a construction site on Sillandweg in Sande. The construction site's fencing was damaged and the perpetrators stole three rolls of copper cable as well as leftover copper cable, a total of around 500 kilograms. It is suspected that a vehicle was used to transport the stolen goods. The police in Sande are asking witnesses to call 04422 9997515 Nordic Post.

Increase in crime in Germany

A look at the nationwide figures shows that theft is a serious problem in Germany. In 2022, around 5.63 million crimes were recorded, including around 1.78 million thefts, which represents an increase compared to the previous year. Shoplifting, bicycle theft and theft from motor vehicles were particularly common. Theft is very common in many places and is increasing all the time. In North Rhine-Westphalia, more than 23,500 residential burglaries were registered in 2022, which accounts for over 35% of all cases in the federal states. The clearance rate for residential burglaries was a meager 16.1% Statista.

The current incidents in Freiberg and Sande show that the perpetrators are often well organized and deliberately steal valuable materials such as copper cables. Copper is a particularly popular material in the construction industry, making it easier for thieves to trade profitably. Anyone who has a good connection to the construction site or has insider information is doing good business and ignoring the legal consequences that such criminal behavior brings with it.

Police have begun investigations into both cases and are appealing to the public to report any suspicious activity. By joining forces, we could perhaps prevent such brazen thefts from continuing to increase in the future.
