Leisniger elementary school students fight against the loss of teachers with a protest song!

In Leisnig, the upcoming secondment of a popular teacher is causing excitement and unrest among students and parents. When the certificates were handed out, the third graders at the local elementary school received the surprising news that their class teacher could be transferred to a high school in Döbeln. This sudden coercive maneuver triggered numerous emotional reactions, especially among the children who have valued the teacher since first grade. The parents didn't take long to ask and started a petition with over 1,000 signatures against the measure, as Sächsische.de reports.

The students' concern for education and their emotional connection to their teacher are clearly understandable. But the feedback from the State Office for Schools and Education was inadequate for the parents. The sudden secondments, which often take place at the beginning or end of the school year, raise questions, especially when one considers the situation of many schools in North Rhine-Westphalia. More than 800 deputations are planned there by the end of the current school semester. The Education and Science Union (GEW) in particular criticizes these short-term decisions: “The health of teachers must come first,” explains Simone Flissikowski from the GEW, as WDR reports.

A song of solidarity

In order to support their class teacher, an imaginative student came up with the idea of creating a protest song. Inspired by the song “Can Anyone Hear Me?” from the popular film “The School of Magical Animals”, a new text has been written. The students met in a church to record their message. The accompanying video features the class's mascot, a fox cuddly toy named Frieda. Frieda has already accompanied generations of students, recording their experiences in “Frieda’s Diary”. This ritual not only shows the bond with their teacher, but also the students' sense of community.

The parents are in close contact and report a lot of approval for their actions. Together they are calling for a revision of the approach to teacher recruitment and secondments. Despite the constant secondments, concern about the teaching supply situation remains an urgent issue. The Education Council has recently made various proposals to counteract the teacher shortage, including reforming teacher training and temporarily reducing timetables. [Deutsches Schulportal](https://deutsches-schulportal.de/bildungswesen/lehr Mangel-bleibt-bundesweit-ein-problem/) highlights that, according to a school management survey, positions remain unfilled at every second school, which further increases the pressure on teachers and their deployments.

The situation in Leisnig is therefore an example of the greater challenges in the education system, which are made clear by the ongoing shortage of teachers and the politics of secondments. Parents and students are not only demanding the well-being of their own teacher, but also a fundamental overhaul of the structures that cause this problem. The questions about the future class management remain unanswered for the time being and the uncertainty represents a great burden for both students and parents. It remains to be seen whether the voices of the Leisniger school will bring the desired success.
