Roßwein: Netto footpath is finally becoming barrier-free - renovation in the final spurt!
In Roßwein, after long efforts, we are finally moving towards the goal of barrier-free access to the Netto market. The Roßwein Disabled People's Advisory Council has been campaigning for over a year to have the footpath on Netto-Weg rebuilt, and the renovation work is now in its final phase. The Netto market, which has now been open for almost three years, began construction work in July 2023. A crucial element that is still missing is the railing, which is intended to increase safety for visitors.
The criticism from the members of the Advisory Board for the Disabled is unmistakable. Friedrich Brixi, the second chairman of the advisory board, emphasizes that the access path is too steep for pedestrians and represents a major barrier without railings. Sebastian Wurdinger-Porebinski, chairman of the advisory board, reminds us that there has already been at least one accident: an elderly woman fell with her walker, which clearly illustrates the need for the conversion. The original plan was to complete the renovation by winter 2024, but the project was delayed due to the need to have at least two offers in place.
Successful collaboration with management
The Disabled People's Advisory Board was re-established shortly after the Netto market opened and has been in contact with the management since January 2024. This collaboration shows that citizens' concerns are being heard and that concrete changes are on the horizon. But residents' patience is being tested as they wait for the construction project to be digitized to make their daily shopping safer.
Residents and especially people with limited mobility hope that the final phase of construction work will be completed soon. The conversion is not just a small step for the Netto market, but a major step forward in creating a barrier-free infrastructure - a concern that has significance far beyond Roßwein. Ultimately, every person, no matter what challenges they are faced with, should have the opportunity to participate in social life without having to limit themselves in everyday tasks such as shopping.
Overall, the development in Roßwein shows that it is important to hear the voice of those affected and to look for solutions together. If the walkway reconstruction is successfully completed, it could serve as a positive example for other cities that are also working on accessibility. Because where barriers fall, the path becomes wider and safer for everyone!
