Renovation of the school toilets in Roßwein: What's next?

The after-school care center at Roßweiner Elementary School is under pressure: the sanitary facilities urgently need to be renovated. These time-honored toilet facilities are now around 20 years old and are showing signs of wear. The first damage has occurred in the last few weeks and now needs to be repaired. Mayor Hubert Paßehr (CDU) and building authority manager Carsten Junghanns informed the technical committee about the situation, which had become increasingly urgent over the past week. The first repairs are scheduled for November 2023 in order to create better hygienic conditions as quickly as possible.

The Roßweiner primary school at Weinberg was able to be occupied again a little over a year ago after extensive renovation work. During the last renovation, however, the sanitary facilities were not renewed because they were still considered to be in order for visual reasons. This now turns out to be the wrong decision, because the well-being of our children also depends on functioning and hygienic sanitary facilities. There is noticeable pressure to initiate the urgently needed adjustments now.

Sanitary facilities in schools

A look at the nationwide situation shows that those responsible in schools are often confronted with similar challenges. According to a survey by the German Children's Fund, only 44% of students are satisfied with the condition of school toilets - a worrying figure. Many students are afraid to use the toilets due to defective fittings and unhygienic conditions. The Schell has pointed out that different satisfaction levels are recorded in each federal state. Protection against vandalism, drinking water hygiene and ease of cleaning are also essential requirements for sanitary equipment in schools that must not be neglected during planning.

Good planning and high-quality medical solutions are crucial. For long-term and comfortable operation, not only the installations are important, but also the use of robust materials, especially in schools where the risk of contamination and damage is higher. Experts recommend frequent cleaning, but at least daily, to ensure hygienic standards.

Regulations and regulations

The provision of toilets in schools is not only a matter of convenience, but also an essential requirement for a safe and pleasant learning environment. The META refers to the DGUV guidelines: There must be at least 4 toilets for 20 students. The number of toilets and handwashing sinks varies depending on the number of students, which makes planning sanitary facilities complicated. Accessibility is also one of the big issues when it comes to new installations.

Schools are faced with the challenge of reconciling all of this: limited budgets, tight time frames and the constant risk of vandalism. It is essential to create a hygienic and user-friendly environment for the students so that the quality of their stay is also promoted.

The upcoming renovations in Roßwein are only a small part of a much larger puzzle that affects many schools in Germany. It is up to us to make the right decisions and ensure the health of our children through proper sanitation.
