Water quality in Central Saxony: Only some bathing areas are safe!
The swimming season is in full swing and many Cologne residents are looking for refreshing places to cool off. The Central Saxony Health Authority recently carried out a comprehensive investigation of the water quality in around 40 outdoor swimming pools and several unguarded bathing areas. The current inspection results show that the majority of these bathing areas are in perfect condition. The Burkersdorfer Pond near Frauenstein and the Mittweida peat pit are particularly worth mentioning, both of which were rated without any complaints. The former Oberbobritzsch outdoor pool and the Niederwiesa natural pool are also available to bathers without any concerns.
However, there is also less good news. The large pond in Freiberg was closed due to blue-green algae. In the last checks, moderate pollution was also found in the Großhartmannsdorf pond. However, such tests are snapshots, as water quality can change quickly due to weather, algae growth or heavy use of the water. The visibility depth in the Jahna near Ostrau, for example, is only ten centimeters, which is far below the recommended value of one meter. The situation is similar in other bodies of water such as the Laasenteich in Choren and the Baderwitz reservoir, where the visibility depth also leaves much to be desired.
What should you pay attention to?
The experts advise to be careful, especially in unsupervised natural waters. High nutrient inputs, especially from precipitation or wastewater, can promote algae blooms, which pose health risks. Health problems such as skin and mucous membrane irritation caused by blue-green algae should not be underestimated. It is therefore worthwhile to prefer swimming in supervised outdoor pools. After a visit to “wild bathing waters”, you should shower thoroughly to remove any possible residue.
All test results are available on the Central Saxony district website and provide an overview of the current water quality in the various outdoor pools and bathing areas. If you want to be on the safe side, you should inform yourself regularly and visit the recommended swimming areas in order to enjoy swimming without risk.
