21-year-old Kosovan grabs a Pedelec and ends up in jail!
A brazen attack on a 27-year-old man in Delitzsch is causing a stir in the region. Last weekend, a 21-year-old suspected robber, a Kosovan, was arrested after he struck on Eilenburger Strasse in the immediate vicinity of an ATM at around 3:45 a.m. on Saturday night. While the victim was withdrawing money, the perpetrator took the opportunity in an unobserved moment and grabbed his Pedelec.
The victim quickly noticed the theft and stopped the withdrawal process. In a desperate attempt to get his property back, he pursued the perpetrator on foot. But during a physical altercation, the 27-year-old ultimately had to watch as the 21-year-old escaped with his Pedelec and the victim's wallet. Fortunately, alerted police officers were quickly on the scene and were able to arrest the suspected robber near the crime scene. A search of his backpack made the matter even more sensitive: Inside, the officers found the victim's personal documents and suspected drugs.
Legal consequences for the perpetrator
The suspect is now being investigated for aggravated theft and violating the Narcotics Act. According to German criminal law, robbery, as in this case, is classified as a particularly serious offense. Depending on the circumstances, this can result in a prison sentence of no less than one year, in less serious cases it can be between six months and five years mtrlegal clarified.
The definition of “predatory theft” includes the use of force or threats after a theft has been completed in order to secure the loot. The law (§ 252 StGB) stipulates that the perpetrator must be “in the act”. In this case, the 21-year-old could have good cards because he was caught immediately after the robbery.
Crime in context
Such incidents are not the exception but fit into a worrying picture. According to current statistics, there were over 38,000 robbery crimes in Germany in 2022, with robbery-homicides falling to just 29 cases. Nevertheless, the trend shows an increase in thefts. A total of around 5.63 million crimes were recorded, with theft being one of the most common types of crime Statista reported.
The cases of bicycle theft are particularly high: in 2022, over 265,000 bicycle thefts were registered. These figures illustrate how important it is to take preventative measures and raise citizens' awareness of the issue of crime. However, the last word in the story of the Delitzsch attack has not yet been spoken, as the alleged robber was taken to prison at the weekend and is now awaiting his legal hearing.
