Farm races and solar parks: Oschatz's future is in the balance!

In the last week of August, as summer slowly comes to an end, people in and around Oschatz can look forward to some special events. That is a highlight Field race in Kleinböhla, which will attract racing fans in droves this weekend. The first event starts on Friday, with the main event following on Saturday. Hundreds of visitors are expected to follow the competition for the fastest tractors.

The Wermsdorf local council also has big plans. On Thursday he will decide on a decision to set up a planned photovoltaic system in the Gröppendorfer Delle. This system is intended to cover the electricity needs of around 20,000 households, although the use of agricultural land for solar parks is increasingly being discussed. Agricultural today reports that the use of farmland for such projects is often met with resistance. Citizens' initiatives demand that dialogue be sought with the municipality and investors.

Conflicts over agricultural land

More and more farmers are feeling the competition from photovoltaic systems, which are prepared to pay higher rental prices and thus take up valuable arable land. The daily news makes it clear that around 80,000 hectares of agricultural land will be needed for solar open space in the coming years. While communities try to generate income by leasing land, the German Farmers' Association warns that arable land used for food and feed production should not be used for solar parks.

A citizens' initiative has formed in Tempelfelde to protest against the construction of an enormous solar system on 200 hectares of farmland. Carsten Preuss, the head of BUND in Brandenburg, expresses sharp criticism of the use of these areas and suggests that roof areas should serve as an alternative to photovoltaics. This raises the question of the extent to which we can properly chart the path for renewable energy production without endangering agriculture.

Local stories and cultural highlights

As the debate over land use heats up, there are also beautiful local stories. Sandra Ely devotes a lot of care to her paralyzed cat Jasmin, who suffered neurological damage after an accident last year. The path of the two is undoubtedly filled with challenges, but also marked by hope.

In addition, a local history exhibition will open in the cross vault of the manor house in Börl on the last weekend in August. Steffen Rohrbach opens its collection of historical photos, newspapers and documents that bring the local history to life in an impressive way.

Whether it's festive events, exciting discussions or little stories from life - the Oschatz region has its hands full this week. Be inspired and enjoy the hustle and bustle!
