Citizens' initiative fights against holiday resort on Lake Seelhausen!

The dispute over a planned holiday resort continues at Seelhausener See in Löbnitz, North Saxony district. A Berlin investor has big plans, but one Citizens' initiative does everything in its power to stop the project. The initiative was formed to protect the former mining site and to raise concerns about the ecological consequences of the construction project. The focus is particularly on possible threats to the lake's ecosystem and the loss of rare animal species.

The investor already commented on his project at a residents' meeting in June. He has reduced the number of planned holiday homes from 279 to 121. In addition to the holiday homes, a sauna, a restaurant, a playground and a café are also planned, which will be accessible not only to guests but also to residents. In addition, the facility plans to create an official bathing beach on Seelhausen Lake, the use of which is currently not permitted for legal reasons. The local council has decided to publicly display the development plans for five weeks from August 5th in order to discuss residents' objections.

Refugee accommodation in Torgau is being renovated

While the discussion about the holiday resort on the lake continues, a shared accommodation facility for refugees in Torgau is being renovated and expanded. This measure is part of the district's strategy to centrally accommodate asylum seekers with little prospect of staying in urban areas. With the expansion, the accommodation can accommodate up to 150 asylum seekers. This project is intended to take into account the fears of the people of Torgau who protested against the conversion of the “Torgauer Brauhof” hotel into a refugee home.

In the region, challenges in accommodating asylum seekers do not appear to be diminishing. According to a report by Municipal Many municipalities are overloaded. Almost half of the cities and municipalities surveyed said that the situation was challenging but feasible. The majority of municipalities are also faced with the need to use private housing to accommodate refugees, which has led to an increase in the number of refugees in recent years.

Quality of life in Schkeuditz in focus

In Schkeuditz there is also a discussion about the quality of life in the city. Here, city officials are struggling with problems such as a lack of affordable housing and noise from traffic. To shape the future until 2035, five city actors share their ideas. It remains to be seen how these plans will impact the quality of life and general housing in the area.

While communities face challenges like these, the people in the region are mourning the loss of one of their own: Dieter Wend, who became known as the “Stork Father” and was committed to nature conservation for decades, has died at the age of 65. His funeral will take place in Mörtitz on Saturday, and his loss leaves a noticeable void in the community.

Jan Teichert, Protestant prison chaplain at the Torgau Correctional Facility, also offers an insight into daily life. He meets serious criminals every day and tries to see the humanity behind their actions in order to give them a bit of hope.

The dynamics surrounding Lake Seelhausen, the fate of the refugees and the challenges in the cities show how complex developments in the region continue to be.
