Eleven-year-old Lara flees from harassers - help in the kebab shop!
An incident in Schkeuditz has shaken up the local community and shows how important moral courage and quick action are in critical moments. Eleven-year-old Lara (name changed) was harassed by an unknown man on Bahnhofstrasse. The suspect, a 65-year-old man, accosted Lara and slapped her on the bottom, causing her to immediately flee to a nearby kebab shop, where she was calmed down by the shop owner's wife, Sulaiman Marrey. Marrey and a colleague then pursued the harasser and held him until the police arrived, who eventually filed a complaint of sexual harassment. This is reported by the LVZ.
Lara's parents are very shocked by what happened, but are grateful for the quick help their daughter received. In particular, the father, who is a psychotherapist, arranges conversations with Lara to work through what she has experienced. The family emphasizes the importance of education for children so that they learn to defend themselves and seek help when they are in danger.
The number of unreported cases of sexual crimes
The incident in Schkeuditz is not only an alarm bell for the local community, but also shows that sexual harassment is a widespread problem. A current study by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), which is considered the largest unreported study in Germany, has shown that the number of unreported cases of sexual crimes is extremely high. Only about one percent of crimes are reported to the authorities. Many sufferers are afraid of a lack of evidence or want to forget the experiences.
This study, based on over 45,000 interviews, also shows that women often feel unsafe in public, especially at night. Around 58% of women avoid certain places while 52% skip public transport, which is an alarming sign in society. BKA boss Holger Münch emphasizes that it is necessary to record not only the visible crimes, but also the crimes that remain obscure in order to optimize prevention measures. Together against harassment
The local authorities and the police were able to prevent another case of sexual harassment thanks to the quick reaction of passers-by in Schkeuditz. Sulaiman Marrey, the snack bar owner, has emphasized not only his values but also his responsibility towards the community. In his culture, harassment is not tolerated, and he emphasizes the importance of looking out for one another as neighbors.
The clearance rate for sexual harassment in Northern Saxony is around 85%, which is a positive development compared to other years. However, the challenge remains to encourage more affected women and men to report incidents. It is all the more important that parents and guardians actively talk to their children about such topics and inform them about getting help if they get into difficulties.
As Lara's family shows, awareness of such issues needs to be raised. Strengthening moral courage and raising awareness of harassment are key to safe community coexistence.
