Blueberry Festival in Mörtitz: Experience picking yourself on July 12th!

The blueberry season has begun in northern Saxony and is attracting numerous picking enthusiasts to Sandra Lorenz’s blueberry garden in Mörtitz. The only garden of this kind in the region opened its doors on June 21st because the berries were particularly ripe this year. The garden is located at Hauptstrasse 8 and offers a total of 2,000 blueberry bushes of the Duke, Blue Crop, Patriot, Goldtraube and Elisabeth varieties. These plants are not only a delight for visitors, but also the result of years of care that the Lorenz family has been practicing since 2011 after they visited a blueberry plantation. A real family business that is run with heart and commitment; After all, being a blueberry farmer is a year-round job with many tasks.

The bushes that grow in the garden areas of the Dreiseitenhof receive a treatment that allows them to live up to 20 years. “Good watering, fertilizing and cutting are essential,” explains Lorenz, who, in addition to growing, also has experience in making blueberry liqueur. To ensure the quality of the berries, a moisture-retaining layer of wood chips and weed fly is used between the bushes. A net protects the berries from voracious birds, because the yield is crucial: “We inform our customers in good time about any unsuitable yield on our website,” says Lorenz.

Conscious enjoyment and experiences

There is a special experience on July 12th when the court festival takes place. Before this festival, the garden is closed for one or two days to ensure there are enough blueberries for visitors. “Here everyone picks for themselves,” is the motto in Mörtitz. Harvesting the sweet berries is not only a taste delight, but also a sociable experience. Picking is possible from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. The prices for the berries are announced on site or by telephone - transparency is very important here.

For those who are planning a slightly longer excursion, it is also worth visiting the Heidelbeerhof Henke in Burgwedel, north of Hanover. Self-picking has been open here since July 5, 2025, with a price of €7.50 per kilogram up to 5 kg, and only €6.50 from 5 kg. If you don't want to bring your own picking containers, you can get baskets on site and the quantities will be weighed after picking. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends, although changes may occur on rainy days. So, keep an eye on the weather!

A thriving business

Blueberries are currently very popular. More and more people are appreciating fresh fruits and the opportunity to harvest them themselves. This is not only healthy, but also fun. Sandra Lorenz is pleased about the positive response and the nice weather, which is helping the yield this year. Their passion for growing blueberries is reflected not only in the excellent quality of the berries, but also in the warm atmosphere of the garden. So it's definitely worth a visit!
