Heat wave brings chaos: daycare centers, clinics and animal owners are making adjustments!
The heat wave that is currently sweeping across Germany poses massive challenges not only for the little ones, but also for the big ones. Reliable protective measures are particularly required in facilities such as daycare centers, nursing homes and among pet owners. In Oschatz, Christoph Härtel, managing director of the Collm Clinic, reports on typical complaints during this time, such as falls and circulatory problems. However, the clinic has prepared well and offers air-conditioned areas to protect patients and staff from the oppressive heat. In addition, drinks are provided for everyone involved and lunch has also been tailored to the high temperatures, so light, refreshing dishes such as cold soups are particularly popular.
Kita “Max & Moritz” has also taken precautions. In extreme temperatures, staying outdoors is avoided and paddling pools and shady retreats are used instead. In the nearby seaside resort of Schildau, the children jumped into the refreshing water at water temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius, which not only ensured a few relaxing hours, but also provided the holiday children with chips and fun. However, caution is advised when it comes to temperatures, especially for vulnerable groups such as older people and children, who are particularly susceptible to heat-related complaints, which the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) emphasizes in a current communication.
Health effects and prevention
The heat not only has an impact on comfort, but also on health, as the RKI states. Older people, pregnant women and children often suffer more from the high temperatures. Therefore, well-coordinated heat protection is necessary. Effective heat control measures are crucial to protect against health risks. Sufficient water intake is essential for construction workers who carry out their work despite the heat: depending on the shift, they drink up to 3.5 liters of water to cope well with the heat.
The Torgau district hospital has so far only treated a few patients with heat-related complaints and has classified the situation overall as stable. Nevertheless, further investment is needed to improve hospital infrastructure for extreme weather. In addition, the Diakonie is committed to providing its seniors with sufficient drinks and shady places to protect them from the negative effects of the heat.
Impact on animals and the environment
But not only people, animals too are suffering from the current heat. Tierhilfe Torgau recommends that pet owners schedule their walks early in the morning or late in the evening. This will help you avoid the biggest warm periods of the day. The forest fire danger level has also increased to 5 for certain forests in the district, which requires further caution.
Despite these challenges, the district of Northern Saxony has so far been spared from a water withdrawal ban, but is monitoring the situation closely. District representatives and health facilities are now communicating to find the best solutions to the high temperatures and minimize their impact on the population. The collaboration between ministries, authorities and the RKI could result in a more reliable heat prevention plan in the future that has all protective measures under control.
The heat wave shows once again how important it is to prepare for extreme weather conditions. Whether in hospitals, daycare centers or animal habitats - the protection and well-being of everyone is our top priority.
