Sonnenland” daycare center in Delitzsch: modernization for the little ones completed!
With a ceremonial act, the renovated “Sonnenland” daycare center in Delitzsch was officially handed over to its little residents and management today. The building, built in 1981, has undergone extensive renovation work, which was carried out in two construction phases during ongoing operations since the beginning of 2024. A total of 127 children are cared for in the facility, which includes the city's largest daycare center for children under the age of three. This shows how important the need for daycare places is in the region, as Mayor Manfred Wilde also emphasized in a report from LVZ.
Half of the renovation costs of 1.3 million euros were covered by the city of Delitzsch and half by funding from the Free State of Saxony and the district. This underlines the city's decisive investment strategy, which not only focuses on the “Sonnenland” daycare center, but also other facilities such as the Bummi daycare center and the Erasmus-Schmidt high school. Together with the covered entrance and new ramp to the basement, over 500 square meters of new acoustic ceilings were installed to reduce noise pollution for small children. The sanitary facilities were also fundamentally renovated and modernized.
Innovative design for the little ones
The daycare center has not only reinvented itself structurally. In addition, the children's groups were named after animal names and the living areas were lovingly designed to create a welcoming atmosphere. This approach shows that children's participation in shaping their environment is taken seriously. “The collaboration during the renovation was consistently positive,” said daycare director Gina-Maria Ehrlich. The little artists even helped paint the walls, which strengthens the bond with their new home.
According to LVZ's report, this exciting renewal is just one part of a broader investment strategy. With the aim of making Delitzsch a family and child-friendly city, there are also future renovation projects, such as the one at the Artur Becker High School.
Nationwide initiatives to promote early childhood education
The importance of daycare centers is also being increasingly recognized at the federal level. A current decision by the Federal Cabinet stipulates that a total of 6.5 billion euros will flow from the special fund for infrastructure into child day care and digital education. This investment is an important step towards modernizing and improving the educational landscape throughout Germany reports the BMBF. Federal Education Minister Karin Prien emphasizes the need for the federal states to also invest specifically in early childhood education from their share of the special fund.
Overall, the opening of the “Sonnenland” daycare center shows the city’s commitment to investing in the future of children and creating an environment in which they can thrive and learn. The ongoing support from government funds puts those responsible on the right track to master the challenges in the area of early childhood care.
