Record participants and exciting victories at the 25th Dresden Marathon!

Last Sunday, October 26, 2025, the coveted one took place Dresden Marathon instead, for the 25th time! A new record was set with over 14,000 participants from all over Germany and 70 nations. Given the overwhelming number of runners, one thing is clear: the event has become a fixture in the marathon scene.

The varied route led through the beautiful city and along the Elbe. However, drivers and public transport users had to expect diversions and closures as the entire city was closed to runners. The weather, for its part, showed its capricious side: With temperatures in the low single digits, the runners had to brave heavy rain and stormy winds.

Top sporting performances

In the men's race, Patrick König from Görlitz won in an impressive time of 2:24:08 hours. Close on his heels was Lennard Muschinsky from Bautzen, who took second place with a time of 2:26:32 hours. In the women's category, Yvonne van Vlerken from the Netherlands was at the top of the podium. With a time of 2:38:18 hours, she ran just a few seconds above her personal best. Agnieszka Glomb from Rosenheim secured second place among the women with 2:58:56 hours. Third-place finisher Paula Gredig also longed for a hot bath after her run.

In addition, considerable achievements were also achieved in the half marathon. Blanka Dörfel from Berlin won with a time of 1:11:44 hours, while Johannes Motschmann took first place in the male segment with 1:03:29 hours. The entire event was not just a sporting competition, all finishers also received a special medal to celebrate the anniversary.

Diverse competitions

The extensive program included various categories - from the AOK 10-kilometer run for those aged 14 and over to the children's marathon for the youngest age groups 2011 to 2018. An overview of the competitions:

  • AOK-10-Kilometer-Lauf: 10 km (ab 14 Jahren)
  • Piepenbrock-Halbmarathon: 21,1 km (ab 16 Jahren)
  • Marathon und Marathon-Staffel: 42,195 km (ab 18 Jahren)
  • Bambini-Lauf: 400 m (Jahrgänge 2018 bis 2022)
  • Kindermarathon: 1,4 km (Jahrgänge 2011 bis 2018)

Even though last year's participant record was 9,500, this year's run exceeded all expectations. And don't forget: In 2024 the route had to be changed due to the collapsed Carola Bridge, which brought additional challenges. The current men's course record has been held since 2019 by Ezekiel Koech from Kenya with a time of 2:10:00 hours, while Teclah Chebet from 2022 set the women's record with 2:30:30 hours.

Marathons are booming – not just in Dresden, as the numbers show Statista show. In 2024, a total of 121 marathons took place in Germany, and so far in 2025, almost 48,000 runners have taken part in the various events. Surveys show that running is very important in Germany: around 45 percent of Germans really enjoy running.

The Dresden Marathon has once again proven that it is a highlight in the sports calendar. Even the adverse weather conditions could not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants. The city and the athletes celebrated a true festival of running!
