Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia: Together for better flood protection!

The political landscape between Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia is taking shape. MDR reports that the two federal states strive for closer cooperation. The foundation stone for this project was laid at a recent cabinet meeting in Stolberg. A central concern is the investment of 200,000 euros in a new concept for flood protection.

The state governments have recognized that reducing bureaucracy is particularly important in the economy and in winegrowing. With a common concept, both countries want to better represent their interests towards the federal government and the EU. Thuringia's Prime Minister Mario Voigt attaches particular importance to the security of financing for cultural sites. A mid-three-digit million amount is required for the growing needs in culture in order to advance current renovation projects, such as the special investment program for palaces, fortresses and gardens.

Our demands on collaboration

The “Stolberg Declaration” not only includes the reduction of bureaucracy, but also a modernization of procurement law. In times of rising energy prices, improvements are also required for citizens, medium-sized businesses and trades. The common interests also extend to the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region, which belongs to both countries, with Saxony-Anhalt taking up the larger part. In order to do justice to this important economic sector, the administrations of both countries would like to cooperate more closely in the areas of wine law and plant protection.

Another crucial point is the development of a flood protection concept. This is intended to take into account the lessons learned from the devastating winter floods of 2023/2024 and define measures along the Helme from the Kelbra dam to the mouth of the Unstrut. Nature conservation is initially given secondary priority in order to prioritize flood protection.

In summary, it can be said that Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia are well on their way to optimizing their political and economic framework conditions. The coming weeks and months will show how effectively this collaboration will be implemented - an exciting development that could have a lasting impact on the region.
