Saxony in a health emergency: 40,000 people without insurance!

On this November 4th, 2025, an explosive topic came into focus in Saxony: the state of medical care for people without health insurance. A current press release from ALLIANCE GREENS shows that there are significant gaps in this area. The Ministry of Social Affairs' response to a small question from MP Thomas Löser reveals that there are no nationwide support offers in the Free State, which is worrying.

It is estimated that around 40,000 people in Saxony live without or only with inadequate health insurance, including many who are in precarious employment or even homeless. These people often receive medical attention late or not at all, which leads to drastic health complications. “It is time for us to build a comprehensive network of state support,” demands Löser and also advocates for the introduction of an anonymous treatment certificate in order to enable these affected people to receive better medical care.

A health emergency

Innovative approaches to supporting people without health insurance already exist in Germany, such as the Medical Treatment Center for Paperless and Uninsured People (MVP) in Bremen, which was founded in 2022. It offers treatments three days a week in a former doctor's office and has helped nearly 1,000 people, including many from more than 70 different countries. Such facilities are crucial because it is estimated that up to a million people in Germany live without health insurance daily news reported.

The MVP not only offers medical treatments, but also supports you in gaining access to official insured status. This additional advisory service has helped 168 people be transferred to the insurance system over the last year and a half. But for many, such offers are still an unattainable luxury.

Demands for change

The GREENS ALLIANCE in Saxony are calling for increased efforts from the government to ensure that people without health insurance are not left in the lurch. Löser emphasizes the need for close cooperation with doctors and other social service providers. “What can be done for people who are often pushed to the margins of society?” he asks urgently and advocates for the perpetuation and expansion of the clearing house of the Saxon Anonymous Treatment Certificate e.V.

Overall, society in Saxony and Germany is faced with the challenge of providing more equitable healthcare. The situation of the approximately 72,000 people without health insurance coverage throughout Germany should be reason enough for everyone to work for a sustainable solution that works not only in theory but also in practice.
