Start of training in Dresden: Crafts are urgently looking for new talent!
A lot has happened in the craft training landscape in the last few days. At the start of the summer holidays, 1,068 young women and men signed their apprenticeship contracts for the new training year in the Dresden chamber district. This shows a certain interest in the opportunities in the skilled trades - although the number of new apprenticeship contracts is slightly below the previous year's level of 1,104, as the Dresden Chamber of Crafts reported.
Manuela Salewski, deputy general manager of the Chamber of Crafts, emphasizes the diversity in the trades: “We offer 130 apprenticeships.” These range from construction, wood and metal to electronics and clothing through to health and nutrition. The need for skilled workers is high and many companies are looking for suitable candidates.
Training offers and trends
The Chamber of Crafts website provides over 430 free training positions, supported by numerous internship offers. The skilled trades in East Saxony have around 80 professions to offer, with internships offering an excellent opportunity to discover talent and make initial contacts. Occupations such as automotive mechatronics technicians, electronics technicians and system mechanics for plumbing, heating and air conditioning technology are particularly in demand.
Despite committed efforts to attract young people to the trades, the number of job vacancies remains alarmingly high. According to a study from KOFAS The number of vacancies in skilled trades reached a record high of around 236,818 in 2022, with many positions unable to be filled, particularly in the construction electrical and plumbing, heating and air conditioning professions. Around eight out of ten open positions remain unfilled here.
The challenge of craftsmanship
The shortage of skilled workers in the skilled trades is an urgent problem that is exacerbated by various factors. The good economic situation in the construction trade, the political goals in climate protection and demographic change call for greater support for dual training. However, there are signs of a trend reversal in the number of newly concluded training contracts because, despite increasing interest, the supply of training places remains behind demand.
To support parents and students, the Chambers of Crafts offer comprehensive information about training opportunities, from brochures on career choices to online tests that help young people discover their strengths and make targeted decisions. The valuable tip: Training in the skilled trades is not only a future-proof choice, but also an exciting opportunity to become active in a dynamic environment.
In the Chamber District of Dresden, which includes the districts of Meißen, Bautzen, Görlitz and Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains, both students and companies should have access to the variety of training and internship offers. Equipping yourself with a good knack for the right jobs could prove to be a worthwhile endeavor.
