Construction work on the Bohemian Road: Restrictions for drivers!

The small but important work on Böhmische Straße in Sebnitz is just around the corner. OnAugust 4thConstruction work on the important access to the border crossing into the Czech Republic will begin in 2025. The State Office for Road Construction and Transport is taking action to repair the retaining wall along state road S154a. This has become particularly necessary because the section in need of renovation is around 40 meters long and is located at Böhmische Straße 50 to 54. The work is scheduled for a construction period of up toAugust 15thand are likely to pose a number of challenges for drivers and residents. For these, half-way traffic is required during construction work, and the city administration is already asking for your understanding of the restrictions.

The construction costs amount to approx40,000 euros, which is a sum well spent considering the need for these repairs. The measure aims to increase road safety and improve the quality of life in the region. Even if the construction work can be perceived as annoying, such measures are ultimately indispensable.

Repairing the bollards at the border crossing

But it's not just the street itself that needs attention. The bollards used at the border crossing in Hinterhermsdorf have also experienced strokes of fate recently. Much to the astonishment of many, most of these bollards, which are used to regulate car traffic and control the use of the forest path, were destroyed. This situation led to a need for quick action by the Sebnitz city administration, which took care of immediate repairs. The first repaired bollards were already onSeptember 13, 2024installed successfully. The repairs cost the city more than1,000 euros.

In the future, large wooden poles will be erected along the crossing to prevent unauthorized crossings with off-road vehicles. This primarily benefits the safety and preservation of the surrounding area. The aim is to ensure that the route is continuously accessible as part of the cross-border assistance provided by the local fire brigade.

Friendship and cooperation across borders

The developments at the border are not only of local interest, but also reflect the long-standing German-Czech friendship. This is based on trust and collaborative partnership. Important documents such as the “Good Neighbor Treaty” of 1992 and the “German-Czech Declaration” of 1997 play a central role. Together, Germany and the Czech Republic are overcoming the challenges that have arisen for the border region, not least as a result of the corona pandemic.

Recently, both Federal Minister Annalena Baerbock and Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský visited the region to exchange information about the cooperation between the fire brigade and police and the experiences of cross-border commuters. This shows that not only infrastructural connections but also human connections are of great importance. The next “German-Czech Regional Forum” is already being planned in order to make the exchange understandable and sustainable.

With the upcoming construction projects, the repair of the bollards and the cross-border initiatives, Sebnitz is very popular when it comes to civil cooperation and the promotion of lively neighborhoods. The outlook for the future remains optimistic, and we can look forward to seeing how the infrastructure and interpersonal relationships continue to develop.
