Steam locomotive 99 585 returns to Lohsdorf - a festival of technology!
Lohsdorf, Deutschland - this day, June 19, 2025, there is a very special atmosphere at Lohsdorf station. Many onlookers have gathered to attend the return of a historical steam locomotive. The steam locomotive 99 585, a true beauty from 1912, is finally put into service after several years of dealing with. The Schönheide Museum Railway has invested many hours of volunteer work in this project. Marko Thoms, board member of the Schwarzbachbahnverein, describes this day as a highlight in the 30-year history of the club.
The steam locomotive, which was originally built at the Saxon machine factory in Chemnitz and was through numerous stationations in Saxony, has already been seen at station festivals in Lohsdorf, but not yet ready to drive. The last big step towards operational readiness was the full processing of the locomotive, which was taken on its own in 2020 in Lohsdorf. As the association reports, numerous individual parts have been restored and re -assembled, with smaller work to be done until the upcoming station festival in August.
special features of the locomotive
The 99 585, also known as IV K, belongs to a series of Saxon narrow -spurlocomotives that were produced between 1892 and 1921. A total of 96 copies of this type were built, which achieve an output of around 210 hp and have a maximum service mass of 29.3 tons. These locomotives are extremely popular in the region and hurry in the lanes of the Saxon narrow -gauge network. The extensive route network comprises over 500 kilometers, a heir to the pioneering period of rail transport, which goes back to 1881 when the first narrow -gauge railway in Saxony was put into operation.
The arrival of the steam locomotive 99 585 is expected with great anticipation, since the low loader should arrive around 2 p.m. Visitors have the opportunity to marvel at the locomotive for a few minutes before it is brought to the vehicle shelter. There is still a railway inspection to be used so that the locomotive can be officially used at the upcoming events, including the Saxony Day in Sebnitz on September 6th and 7th.
museum and other plans
At the Lohsdorf train station itself, there is not only the steam locomotive to admire, but also a small museum that already shows a film about the processing of the locomotive and presents old work equipment. The association also plans to continue the route construction towards Unterehrenberg. Unfortunately, there are natural law hurdles that currently prevent expansion towards Schwarzbachtal.
The Schwarzbachbahn is the only 750 mm femotant track in Saxon Switzerland and has built up a loyal fan base over the years. Again and again the trips through the picturesque Saxon landscape captivate numerous visitors. In order to meet such special attractions in the future, the association has set up a donation account in order to secure the processing and operation of the steam locomotive. The ticket prices of the museum railway are also attractive for families and range from 5.00 euros for adults to EUR 21.00 for a family card.
