Collapse of the Carola Bridge: Dresden plans new construction and daycare closures!
The Carola Bridge, which tragically partially collapsed a year ago, on September 11, 2024, came to an abrupt end. The incident occurred without any injuries, but the damage was significant. With a daily traffic volume of around 30,000 vehicles, the Carola Bridge was a central Elbe crossing in Dresden. Reconstruction is urgently needed for the city's infrastructure, and the city administration has already taken the first steps. The tender for the new building has begun, with construction work expected to start in 2028, according to Sächsische.de reported.
An independent expert was commissioned by the state capital Dresden to determine the exact causes of the collapse. The final report, published on May 28, 2025, provided clarifying findings. The clear cause was identified as stress corrosion cracking combined with material fatigue caused by moisture during construction. By then, coordinated tests of the bridge had already been carried out in accordance with applicable standards.
Looking to the future: reconstruction and surveillance strategies
The demolition of the damaged bridge area is unavoidable as all bridge trains can no longer be put back into operation due to damage. Continuous sound emission monitoring has been installed since the collapse in order to identify potential further damage at an early stage. The number of detections of tension wire breaks since February 2025 shows how important these measures are and that monitoring of the bridge remains urgently necessary.
Parallel to this infrastructural issue, the reactivation of the Dresden-Neustadt freight station is on Deutsche Bahn’s agenda. The first work on this is scheduled to begin at the end of 2025, and from 2027 the area will become a major construction site. This will involve extensive closures. An SPD city councilor has already sent a specific list of demands to the railway in order to optimize the project and minimize possible disruptions.
Social challenges: daycare center closures in Dresden
As the city grapples with the challenges surrounding the bridge, it is also facing social changes. Due to falling birth rates and cost pressure, the city is planning to close two daycare centers. The “Plauener Kobolde” daycare center and a facility on Maxim-Gorki-Straße that looks after children with hearing impairments are affected. However, a new offer for the affected children will be created nearby to ensure continued care.
The decision on the closures will be discussed in the coming months, with a decision expected to be made in December. These developments come alongside a worrying rise in violence in the city, with people across different political spectrums being attacked. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, there are around 1,400 violent right-wing extremists and around 660 violent left-wing extremists living in Saxony. The city is not only facing infrastructural but also social challenges.
Overall, the situation surrounding the Carola Bridge and the ongoing projects in Dresden remains tense. The city leadership and the railway are working at full speed to keep the infrastructure and social offerings stable. Innovative approaches to monitoring and assessing the condition of bridges, such as those pursued within the framework of the DFG priority program SPP100, could also play a decisive role in Dresden in the future. The use of digital twins and high-resolution sensor technology shows how serious the city is about the security of its infrastructure, led by the belief that preventative measures are essential to avoid such incidents in the future, as Ingenieur.de explained.
