Freital: Cycling bridge closed - work until July 4th.

Freital, Deutschland - What's going on in Freital? The popular Weißeritztalradweg between the "Golden Löwen" and Deubener Straße is currently closed. The reason for this is necessary sealing work on the newly built rehabilitation bridge, which was only inaugurated a few months ago. This construction site is currently ensuring some detours that cyclists should remember in the region.

The work started on June 23 and is expected to last until July 4th. During this time, the cycle path is completely blocked. The Weishaupt company takes care of the necessary work that has proven to be essential for the maintenance of the bridge. The bridge itself is currently fully equipped, and the railings are covered as a precaution with film, such as Sächsische reported.

detour and challenges

cyclists have to drive in alternatives during this time. Fortunately, the 115 -meter -long section was released in January 2025 after three months of construction, so that the detours no longer lead over the busy Dresdner Straße. This redirection is an advantage for many, even if the current blocking still has certain challenges.

The planning and expansion of bike paths often have special challenges, especially when existing trees are nearby. As explained Ecotrade Leipzig, tree roots can interfere with root growth and lead to deformation on the bike path. Such damage can repeatedly represent safety hazards for cyclists and pedestrians.

  • tree roots can damage frost or support layers.
  • root growth causes strong deformations in the substructure of paths.
  • Modern construction methods, such as the wabia system with terram geocelles, protect the roots and receive the load -bearing capacity of the underground.

While the current construction site is burdening the users of the Weißeritztalradweg, there is also a positive perspective: The bike path could be well equipped for the future thanks to the renewal and the planned measures. Many cyclists look forward to a safe, continuous journey without detours as soon as the construction site is completed.
