Freital: Cycle path bridge closed – work will last until July 4th!

What's going on in Freital? The popular Weißeritztal cycle path between the “Golden Lion” and Deubener Straße is currently closed. The reason for this is necessary sealing work on the newly built Wiederitz Bridge, which was inaugurated just a few months ago. This construction site is currently causing some detours that cyclists in the region should take note of.

The work began on June 23rd and is expected to last until July 4th. During this time the cycle path is completely closed. The Weishaupt company is taking care of the necessary work, which has proven to be essential for the maintenance of the bridge. The bridge itself is currently completely scaffolded, and the railings are covered with foil as a precaution, as Sächsische reports.

Detour and challenges

Cyclists must use alternative routes during this time. Fortunately, the 115 meter long section was opened in January 2025 after a three-month construction period, so that the diversions no longer lead over the busy Dresdner Straße. This diversion is an advantage for many, although the current closure still poses certain challenges.

The planning and expansion of cycle paths often brings with it special challenges, especially if there are existing trees nearby. As [Ecotrade Leipzig](https://www.ecotrade-leipzig.de/blog/nachhaltenr-radwegebau-mit- Wurzelbruecken) explains, tree roots can disrupt root growth and lead to deformation on the cycle path. Such damage can always pose safety risks for cyclists and pedestrians.

While the current construction site is putting a strain on users of the Weißeritztal cycle path, there is also a positive perspective: thanks to the renovation and the planned measures, the cycle path could be well prepared for the future. Many cyclists are looking forward to a safe, continuous journey without detours once the construction site is completed.

For further information on the current diversions and the situation on the cycle path, it is worth taking a look at the [Brachttal] website (https://www.brachttal.de/rathaus-buergerschaft/aktuelles/pressearchiv/2021/sperrung-der-bruecke-und-umleitungsplan-radweg/), where all the details are compiled.
