Together for the forest: 2,200 trees planted in Saxon Switzerland!
The Saxon Switzerland national park region has been transformed into a green paradise in the past few days, thanks to courageous planting campaigns for reforestation. The volunteers, including AOK PLUS employees and forest owners, have joined forces to counteract the damaging bark beetle infestation and create a diverse mixed forest. How nationalpark-saechsische-schweiz.de reports, two important locations were selected for this: the Kirchenwald in Lichtenhain and an area owned by Kanu Aktiv Tours GmbH in Rathmannsdorf.
In total, around 2,200 trees were planted, including species such as larch, Douglas fir, red oak and sycamore maple. The church forest in Lichtenhain in particular has suffered from the bark beetle calamity; the area was completely cleared to make room for new, resistant trees. On November 1, 2025, around 30 volunteers planted around 1,500 forest plants in this area, followed by 15 more volunteers who planted 700 trees in Rathmannsdorf on November 2.
Forest care and future projects
The plants all come from a forestry nursery where emphasis is placed on the highest quality. Mandy Auerswald took over the financing of the planting campaign in Rathmannsdorf, who donated her winnings from a tree sponsorship competition. This initiative is supported by AOK PLUS, which sees the project as part of its social commitment. The Sachsenforst National Park and Forestry Administration will continuously monitor the development of the planted areas - from the first planting through to regular maintenance to ensure the success of these reforestation measures.
There is a strong need for sustainability and reforestation in this region. The success of these actions could form the basis for further reforestation projects in the parish in the near future. “The desire to repeat similar projects has already been expressed,” said a representative of the national park administration.
Bark beetle situation in Saxony
There could now also be some relief in the infestation situation in sight. The current amount of infested wood is around 36% of the previous year's amount and is still above the values before 2018. This is also a direct result of the almost complete loss of spruce in the main damaged areas and the effectiveness of the successfully implemented countermeasures.
The issue of forest and nature conservation is not just a local concern, but a concern for society as a whole. When it comes to insight into the numbers and measurements of heights or lengths, a converter for converting between centimeters and feet, for example, can help, as shown on thecalculatorsite.com can be found. Here everyone can easily convert their units of measurement - a small but useful aid to better understand the dimensions of nature.
Overall, the Saxon Switzerland region shows that community commitment and well-founded measures are necessary to effectively revive forests damaged by bark beetles. The steps taken are an important part of the efforts to preserve our forests - and it is to be hoped that these projects will be continued in the future.
