Glashütte commemorates war victims: wooden cross put back up after storm!
A strong storm left its mark in the small town of Glashütte on October 17, 2024. With the destruction of the memorial cross in the cemetery, not only was an important place of remembrance damaged, but the connection to the history of the fallen soldiers was also briefly severed. But now, after more than a year of renovation work, the community can breathe a sigh of relief: the cross has been put back up.
As the Saxon reports, the renovation of the memorial for the victims of the Second World War was a joint task. The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Osterzgebirge and the city of Glashütte quickly agreed on the need for repairs. David Keller, the church district manager, said the delays on their part were largely due to problems with insurance. The church originally planned to cover the damage through its own insurance, but the memorial cross belongs to the municipality as a war memorial, which changed responsibility for the costs.
The revival of an important memorial
The reconstruction of the cross, which was carried out by a specialist company, cost around 7,000 euros. After much preparation and planning, the memorial could finally be re-erected in its original form. In many regions of Germany, war memorials commemorate the fallen soldiers, and the list of war memorials Wikipedia can be found, includes a large number of sites. The online project “Fallen Memorials” shows the great interest in the culture of remembrance and by November 2025 had already recorded 4,607,000 names that represent the fallen soldiers of the German and Austrian armed forces.
In Glashütte, not only was a simple wooden frame replaced, but the memory of the victims of the war was placed on a new foundation. Such memorials are of great importance to many people as they keep history alive and provide a place for reflection. Restoring the cross not only preserves history, but also takes responsibility for one's own past.
The revival of this important memorial is a positive sign for the Glashütte community. It shows that even after adverse circumstances, people's tireless spirit remains. It also makes it clear how important it is not to forget our history - here, remembrance work is carried out in a very special way.
