Historical spectacle The Swedes conquer Königstein is canceled in 2025!

Unfortunately, the popular historical spectacle “The Swedes conquer the Königstein”, which was planned for June 20th and 21st, has been canceled this year. This decision was made due to ongoing construction work on the old barracks on Paradeplatz. André Thieme, managing director of Festung Königstein gGmbH, very much regrets this step, as the event is a highlight for history enthusiasts and families from all over Germany. How Weekly Courier reported, the safety and quality of the event cannot be guaranteed this year. However, Thieme is optimistic that the spectacle can take place again in 2026.

Since 2009, the event has attracted numerous visitors every year with over 20 historical societies from two nations. A highlight of the production is the storming of the fortress, which brings the knowledge of the Thirty Years' War to life. Königstein Fortress will still remain a popular excursion destination during the construction work, as regular museum operations will not be affected by the work. All exhibitions and viewing points remain open and accessible without restrictions.

Attractive offers and excursion destinations

Despite the circumstances, visitors to the fortress can experience exciting tours and family-friendly hands-on activities. The special exhibition “Along the Elbe” is open regularly and complements the diverse program. If you want to enjoy the wonderful view from the fortress, there are also convenient hiking trails in the area that are perfect for a trip.

A popular starting point for a hike to the fortress is the post mile column on Bielastrasse, Königstein. The path leads over the bridge to Biela, past the impressive parish church of St. Marien and the historic birthplace of Julius Otto. The climb through the beech forest is particularly colorful in autumn and leads to the fortress in about half an hour. If you're in a hurry, you can also use the alternative ascent in just ten minutes.

For those who would like to learn more about the history of the fortress, it is worth taking a detour to the Old Barracks, the Old Armory and the Christiansburg, the most architecturally significant building in the complex. The tour along the fortress wall offers impressive views of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains that should not be missed.
