Heat wave is imminent! Pirna warns everyone with a new heat protection concept

The summer heat has us firmly in its grip and not only causes humid nights, but also poses health risks, especially for vulnerable groups. On July 1, 2025, the Pirna district office will present a comprehensive heat protection concept for the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district, which is aimed at municipalities and public institutions. The aim is to promote protective measures and to protect the population as best as possible from the dangers of heat. Saxon newspaper reports on the specific instructions that are important for hospitals, care facilities, schools, daycare centers and companies.

The focus is particularly on older people, those living alone, those in need of care and those with chronic illnesses, but infants and small children are also among the most vulnerable groups. The heat concept also offers helpful heat etiquette with various tips to avoid health risks, such as airy clothing, light food and sufficient water intake.

Together against the heat

It's not just the municipalities in Saxony that are addressing the issue of heat. The Federal Ministry of Health informs that the responsibility for heat measures in Germany is distributed among the states and municipalities. Since 2017, there have been comprehensive recommendations for the creation of municipal heat action plans based on WHO guidelines. Each area has its own challenges, which is why urban design measures, green space development and information campaigns may vary.

The importance of heat action plans is also becoming increasingly emphasized in the wake of climate change. The forecasts indicate an increasing number of hot days, which can have a significant impact on the health of people in Germany. The Robert Koch Institute draws attention to the increasing health risks, especially for older people, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses.

Tips for hot days

If you want to survive the hot days well, you should follow a few simple tips. The heat protection concept offers useful advice on how to effectively reduce the temperature indoors. This includes closing windows and blinds during the hottest hours, wearing airy clothing and eating light foods. Above all, fluid intake should not be neglected to prevent dehydration.

Overall, we are all asked to take simple measures to protect everyone's well-being, as the heat will probably keep us busy in the coming years. So let’s stay alert and behave responsibly. Summer is really fun!
