Skilled immigration in Germany: An overview

The challenges in securing skilled workers should not be underestimated. Demographic developments and the impending retirement of the baby boomers make the immigration of skilled workers more necessary than ever. This became clear when the annual meeting of the German Welcome Centers took place on June 13th and 14th, 2025 at the IHK Nuremberg for Middle Franconia. Around 150 representatives from welcome centers and experts discussed current labor law procedures and practical questions about life in Germany. The aim of these meetings is to further develop the Welcome Center's offerings through the exchange of experiences and impulses from politics.

The numbers from Bavaria are particularly alarming. According to the IHK skilled workers radar, there was already a shortage of around 157,000 workers in 2022, and this shortage could increase to 176,000 by 2027. The Bavarian Interior State Secretary Sandro Kirchner emphasizes the importance of skilled immigration as a decisive factor for economic growth and prosperity. In order to meet these challenges, measures such as the establishment of a central office for skilled immigration and a “fast lane” for nursing professionals were implemented.

For many companies, the support provided by Welcome Centers is invaluable. These facilities not only help foreign skilled workers find their way in Germany, but also actively support employers in their integration. As the [Federal Agency for Migration and Refugees](https://www.bamf.de/SharedDocs/Press Releases/DE/2024/240614-fachkraefte-gewinnen.html) reports, a simplification of the immigration and naturalization procedures is being demanded from various sides in order to make the process easier for everyone involved.

Current developments show that proactive exchange and cooperation between companies and institutions is not only desirable, but necessary in order to be well positioned in the future. Companies and interested parties should therefore take the opportunity to find out more and exchange information at the Welcome Center's upcoming online exchange.
