THE THEMENT CHILDER in Tharandt: New multifunctional building for nature!
On Friday, June 13, 2025, a festive guideline for a new multifunctional building took place in the Hartha Forstpark in Tharandt. This splendid specimen, which will soon come up with an area of 175 square meters, will be located in the 35 hectare North America area of the forest botanical garden. After a construction period of just eight months, the building is about to complete after the preparatory work extended over ten years. The first considerations for a new building even go back twelve years, at that time a visitor center in cooperation with the German Hygiene Museum was planned. The need for the new building was registered in 2014, and since then the plans have gradually been concretized.
Now a modern work environment is created in the new structure, which includes urgently needed rooms such as a workshop, a seminar room for up to 30 people, changing rooms, showers and toilets. A special highlight will also be the room to prepare seed samples. According to Sächsische, the financing of the project is in height of 2.2 million euros, which underlines the importance of the project. Architect Steffen Burucker emphasizes that the building is created in wooden frame construction and the wood used comes from the Sachsenforst region to reduce the energy costs through the natural insulation value of the material.
a place of research and relaxation
The forest botanical garden Tharandt, which belongs to the Technical University of Dresden and was founded in 1811, is not only a feast for the eyes for plant lovers, but also plays a crucial role in research and the preservation of biological diversity. The gardens offer a wide range of plant species from all over the world, whereby the focus is on forestry species. More on this fascinating topic can be read on Forstersen.
The new facility will certainly be an enrichment for the coming visitors. Professor Bernhard Schuldt emphasizes the need to improve the parking situation for the guests who want to visit the garden in order to enjoy the beauty of nature in a relaxed atmosphere. While the work for the construction of the multifunctional building is progressing, the forest botanical garden remains a place around which the natural rainbows develop - it is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until October 31, admission is free and dogs can be led on a leash.
versatile offers for young and old
In addition to the botanical treasures, there is also a forest garden shop available with information material, books and gifts on topics related to trees. Unfortunately, the shop had to close temporarily due to illness, while the Swiss house is open on working days during the season. Garden tours can be booked for groups of up to 15 people and take about 1.5 to 2 hours - a perfect way to immerse yourself deeper into the matter. There is more information on this on the website Forstpark.
With the combination of a modern new building and the historical importance of the botanical gardens in Tharandt, an exciting future is emerging where nature and science go hand in hand.
