Renovation of the S168 in Struppen: full closure until 2027!

The renovation of the S168 in Struppen began in March 2023 and will extend over several years. Since then, the road that runs through the picturesque village has been completely closed. This measure was necessary because the approximately 2.6 kilometer long route was in severe disrepair and was affected by a lot of pothole-like damage. Thanks to the commitment of residents and the community, an expansion of the dilapidated stretch of road, which had been awaited for a long time, was finally achieved. The first construction phase, which covers 620 meters of the road, begins below the country butcher's shop and extends to the junction at Kirchberg.

The work is currently going according to plan. Loud Saxon newspaper The first phase is expected to be completed in the second half of 2027. Some problems with the pipe network have also been identified so far, which must be taken into account during the construction work.

Construction work and traffic

Further construction work on the S168 will follow from March 3, 2025. These are carried out by Teichmann Bau GmbH from Wilsdruff. During this time the road will be completely closed again, but accessibility for residents is guaranteed. Motor vehicles can still access their adjacent properties. Diversion routes and alternative stops have been coordinated with the bus company RVSOE. This guarantees that, despite the construction site setup and milling work, residents are not completely cut off, as the information provided by the Pirna District Office show.

The construction work is weather dependent, meaning there is a possible interruption in winter 2025/26. During this time, the construction sections should be made passable so that residents do not have to suffer unnecessarily. The district office will announce further information in a timely manner in order to continue to keep the local population informed.

Context of road construction in Germany

The renovation of the S168 is part of a larger trend in Germany in which many roads are being put to the test. Especially after the collapse of the Carola Bridge in Dresden in 2024, investments in infrastructure are more in demand than ever. The federal government decided on a renovation package worth around 500 billion euros to not only repair dilapidated roads, but also to expand the federal highway network. This is not just about motor vehicle roads, but also pedestrian and cycle paths as well as parking spaces, such as Statista reported.

In 2024, sales in road construction rose to over 14 billion euros, and more than 80,000 people are employed in road construction. However, many citizens are dissatisfied with the condition of the roads. Common damage such as potholes, cracks in the asphalt or uneven road surfaces cause frustration and are a significant topic in public discussion. The renovation measures in Struppen could therefore be seen as a prime example of the necessary and long overdue investments in road construction.
