Serious e-bike accident in Pirna: Drivers suffer life-threatening injuries
A serious e-bike accident caused excitement in Pirna on Wednesday afternoon. A 52-year-old driver fell on the B172 while using the foot and bike path along Dresdner Straße. Unfortunately, the man was on the road without a helmet when he hit a rod of a traffic sign and suffered serious head injuries. The accident passed as part of an ever growing accident scenario with e-bikes, about that Sächsische.de reported
eyewitnesses, including two firefighters, immediately provided first aid. The injured initially remained unconscious until the DRK Pirna's emergency services and an emergency doctor arrived a short time later. "It was a terrible sight," said a passer -by. Living measures had to be taken at the scene of the accident because the condition of the cyclist was critical. A rescue helicopter, Christoph 62, was requested due to the severity of his injuries.
The dangers of e-bike accidents
e-bike accidents have risen sharply in recent years and often lead to serious injuries. According to a study by the Zurich University Hospital (USZ), the patterns of head injuries to e-bike drivers can usually be compared to those of motorcyclists. This knowledge provides University Hospital Zurich and thus represents a serious warning.
Although e-bikes are often at low speeds compared to motorcycles, the injuries are more serious. The data analysis of 1,068 patients treated between 2009 and 2018 shows that e-bike drivers are 55 years old and in almost 70 % of the cases in an accident wore a helmet. But even with helmet carriers, there are often serious skull brain trauma, which indicates the danger of accidents.
necessary protective measures
It is particularly alarming that the probability of severe brain damage without a helmet is six times higher. The risk of subdural hematoma is even thirteen. This illustrates how crucial preventive measures are, especially since the average age of e-bike drivers is higher than with conventional cyclists. The MDR study therefore calls for an intensive information about the dangers of cycling without suitable head protection.
The injured cyclist was transported to Dresden after first medical medical care. The B172 was fully blocked during the operation, but the route could be released for traffic shortly after 5 p.m.
