No more service! Citizens' Service Center Sachsen-Allee is closing forever

The Sachsen-Allee citizen service point in Chemnitz will be closed at the end of 2025. The last opening day for citizens who have an appointment is December 23, 2025. This decision was made by the city council in March 2023 and is part of an action plan to reduce the city's budget deficit. The Citizens' Service Office, which opened on March 31, 2003 and is the most frequently used branch of the registration authority, will therefore close its doors.

But not everyone agrees with this decision. Older citizens are particularly concerned. Silvia Schletter, a local resident, expresses her criticism and draws attention to the difficulties associated with the closure for older people without mobility. As she reports, her community feels excluded from city life due to the closure. Her father-in-law, Gottfried Schippers, shares similar fears: “How are older people supposed to get into the city without the service center?”

Protests and concerns from residents

The closure not only affects Sachsen-Allee, but also seven other citizen service points in various towns. Andreas Stoppke, mayor of Klaffenbach, criticizes the decision as dangerous for the quality of life of his fellow citizens. He reminds us that the citizens' service point in the Klaffenbach town hall is open every second Thursday, which offers citizens, including Viola Schippers and her father-in-law, an important point of contact.

The city justifies the closure with insufficient utilization of the service points in the towns. However, this view is strongly doubted by many residents, including Volkmar Schöpke, who report active operations. The city attributes the closure to a limited budget, which is difficult for those affected to understand. However, a possible solution through local public transport is also questioned by CVAG, as cuts have also been announced there.

Conclusions and alternative points of contact

After the closure of Sachsen-Allee, there are not many alternatives left to meet the needs of citizens. Further service points are planned in the city, for example in the Bürgerhaus am Wall, as well as the citizen service points in Morgenleite and Rabenstein, which, however, are only open by prior appointment. In addition, the citizen service points in the surrounding towns are open on specified days without appointments. If you would like to find out more, you can find all the information about opening times and offers on the city of Chemnitz website: www.chemnitz.de/buergerservicestellen.

Given the impending closure, it remains to be seen how the city will deal with citizens' legitimate concerns. Residents and those affected hope that the city council will find a solution in its upcoming meetings that meets the needs of all Chemnitz residents. The debate about the closures impressively shows how important such services are for the quality of life in the districts.
