Solidarity Pirna wins the Saxon Democracy Prize 2025!

The Saxon Promotion Prize for Democracy 2025 will be awarded to the Solidarity Pirna Initiative. Since its founding at the end of 2023, this remarkable group has set itself the goal of making diversity visible and countering misanthropic positions. What is particularly noteworthy is that despite a difficult political climate and little support from the city, impressive successes were achieved. The Amadeu Antonio Foundation highlights the initiative in its communication and emphasizes its significant impact on the local and cultural environment.

The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros and is awarded for commitment to promoting democratic culture, human rights and against discrimination. This award is given annually by various foundations and the Ministry of Social Affairs to honor actors who support democracy and human rights in Saxony. In addition to Solidarity Pirna, the city of Zwickau was also recognized as a “Municipality of Democracy”. Zwickau shows in concrete terms how democracy can be promoted through active local government.

Various honors in Saxony

Other notable projects also received awards this year. The Grand Beauty project in Leipzig received a prize, and the “different people” association in Chemnitz and the Jewish Alliance of Central Germany were also honored. These award winners represent the multitude of initiatives that are committed to an open and democratic society in Saxony.

The Saxon Promotion Prize for Democracy, which is being awarded for the 17th time this year, is an important platform for recognizing commitment in the fight against racism, anti-Semitism and right-wing extremism. The application phase for the 2023 prize started on May 23rd and the award ceremony will take place on November 9th, 2023 in the Small House of the State Theater in Dresden. Further information can be found on the website of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, which also supports the competition for the prize. Amadeu Antonio Foundation also reports on the focus of the prize.

The independent jury, consisting of members of civil society, science and culture, faces the challenging task of evaluating the many strong projects. Timo Reinfrank from the Amadeu Antonio Foundation emphasizes the need to continuously promote democratic engagement in Saxony. This is particularly relevant as many initiatives are under increasing pressure, as those at Network Courage emphasize.

In summary, the Saxon Promotion Prize for Democracy is more than just an award; it is a sign of resistance against intolerance and an important step towards an open and respectful society. In times when such values are often put to the test, initiatives such as Solidarity Pirna and the award-winning municipalities show that commitment to democracy is alive and necessary.
