In Werne, North Rhine-Westphalia, today, October 26, 2025, the cityscape will be enlivened by the Sim-Jü fair. This traditional event, which lasts until October 28th, is not only a highlight for the locals, but also attracts numerous visitors from the region. The Sim-Jü-Kirmes has its roots in 1362, when market rights were granted, and has had a significant influence on the city's development since then. Over the years, the festival's importance has continued to grow, so that today it is ranked 77th among the largest folk festivals with carousels in the UMM ranking. The organizers expect up to 400,000 visitors on an event area of 4.0 hectares. In addition to the shops being open for sales, the program also includes an evening fireworks display on Monday and a general merchandise and livestock market on Tuesday. Legal framework
In North Rhine-Westphalia, specific regulations apply to shop opening times, which are set out in the Shop Opening Act (LÖG NRW). In general, business days and especially Saturdays are open for retail from midnight to midnight. However, according to the regulations of the LÖG NRW, Sunday remains largely closed, with the exception of some exceptions such as bakeries or flower shops. The opportunity to take part in a maximum of four shopping Sundays per year ensures that such occasions can be celebrated in a special way. The shops in Werne have agreed not only to open their doors at the Sim-Jü-Kirmes, but also to attract customers with special offers. In addition to today's shopping Sunday, there will be two further opportunities this year: on November 9th you can stroll around the St. Martin's Market and on December 14th the population can look forward to the Christmas market.
