The new Corona variant Nimbus
The focus is also on the newly discovered Corona variant Nimbus, which has been known since the end of January 2025. According to that daily news Nimbus is a subtype of the Omicron variant. It first appeared in Germany at the end of March 2025 and was responsible for around 20% of the infections examined in May. Despite its spread, there is currently no evidence of more severe disease, and the WHO has classified it as a “variant under observation”.
From a European perspective, the spread of Nimbus cannot be compared to the massive spread of the Delta variant that wreaked havoc in 2021. According to initial laboratory studies, Nimbus may be more contagious but not cause more severe hospitalization rates. The current vaccines appear to remain effective, and the STIKO recommends an annual booster vaccination for people over 60 and at-risk groups.
Overall overview of the Corona situation in Germany
Across the entire country, the balance is as follows: To date, a total of 39,063,627 COVID cases have been registered in Germany, with a 7-day incidence of 0.6 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants. There are currently only 109 new infections, which is an encouraging development. However, there were also two more deaths, bringing the total to 187,753.
Another positive aspect is the vaccination rate, which is 76.3% for basic immunized people by April 8, 2023. In recent weeks, figures have also shown that the proportion of acute respiratory infections that can be traced back to COVID-19 is declining. Only 2% of all hospital admissions for respiratory diseases are COVID-19 cases, which indicates a generally low level of infection, as is the case Corona in numbers confirmed.
Continued vigilance regarding the new Nimbus variant is recommended for the coming weeks, but developments so far give hope that the situation is under control. With such a low infection rate, the population is well on the way to regaining some sense of normality.
