Wolves conquer Saxony: new territories and exciting young news!
Muldenhammer, Deutschland - In Saxony there are exciting news from the world of wolves. On July 10, 2025, new wolf territories and further youngsters were confirmed as part of the wolf monitoring, as reported on MedienSachsen.de , a total of 41 wolfsterritories in Saxony are known. There are 28 of them in Oberlausitz, where a wolf couple and 27 wolf pack frolic. It has also been proven that in the Liebschützberg and Marienberg area, two wolf pairs, for the first time received offspring and are now considered a pack. However, it remains to be seen how the territories will develop next year, since the final evaluation of the data for seven other areas has not yet been completed.
A particularly remarkable aspect is the decline in a wolf territory in the Colditzer Forst. This area was confirmed in 2021/2022 as a couple and in 20222/2023 as a pack with five puppies, but now it seems to have become uncomfortable for the wolves. Unfavorable conditions such as illnesses or possibly illegal hunting could have led to the disappearance of the pack.
monitoring and the importance of wolf population
The monitoring in Saxony, which has been carried out since 2001, is based on genetic samples and photo trap shots and is realized in cooperation with the Senckenberg Museum and the Lupus Institute. Each federal state in Germany conducts surveys independently, whereby the results in September will be compiled at a national monitoring meeting. The period of the monitoring year extends from May 1st to April 30th of the following year, which includes a biological “wolf year”. A total of 85 wolf territories are currently recorded in Germany, as the website of the dbb Shows.
In view of the stable wolf population and the new developments in Saxony, we can look forward to the numbers and reports in autumn 2025 when the final results are published. The Saxon Wolf Population is a fascinating part of our wildlife, which continues to attract the attention of the scientists and the public.
