Trains between Halberstadt and Wernigerode closed until Friday!
A real annoyance for commuters and travelers in German rail traffic: The railway line between Halberstadt, Wernigerode and Goslar has been closed since Thursday. Deutsche Bahn has taken this measure to carry out urgently needed repairs to the thresholds. This was necessary after the state of the thresholds were detected as deteriorated with regular inspections. Until Friday, no trains will run on the affected section, which leads to many passengers to switch to rail replacement traffic by bus.
The affected route between Halberstadt-Heudeber-Danstedt is already classified as a "damaged section", which underlines the urgency of the repairs. In order to ensure the security standards, immediate blocking was essential. Deutsche Bahn is also planning a complete renewal of the section for 2026, since multiple broken thresholds have been exchanged in recent years. After the planned release on Friday at 4 a.m., the section will initially only be accessible at 50 km/h.
background of the measures
The problems with the rail infrastructure are not new. According to MDR , the rail infrastructure in Central Germany is badly affected, which justifies the ongoing inspection and exchange programs. Since summer 2022, Deutsche Bahn has introduced a comprehensive program for inspection and exchange of concrete thresholds, which was launched as a direct reaction to the tragic train accident in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in June 2022. There were harmful thresholds the cause of the accident and led to a rethink in the security structure.
As part of this initiative, the DB group has already exchanged over 1.7 million thresholds. These extensive work are part of a comprehensive renovation program that is to be continued by 2027. The DB Group is planning to invest over 53 billion euros in order to improve the rail infrastructure and to guarantee safe travel in Germany.
Future view for the rail infrastructure
Deutsche Bahn not only wants to repair thresholds with its S3 renovation program, but also to bring the entire infrastructure to the fore. Sustainable investments are planned that include the modernization of train stations and the introduction of new technologies. By 2027, 400 train stations are to be designed more customer -friendly and over 220 small and medium -sized measures are to be put into operation. These far -reaching plans also include the replacement of outdated signal boxes to reduce train failures.
The rail infrastructure is about a change that will hopefully soon bring noticeable improvements for travelers. Mobile and safer, the focus is on that! The current blocking is annoying, but necessary to enable a better travel experience in the long term. Deutsche Bahn is on the right track, even if the current circumstances are uncomfortable for those affected.
