20 years of standstill: Kirchberg and Wilkau-Haßlau are fighting for a cycle path!
On a day that marks the 20th anniversary of the planning for the Rödellbach cycle path, the cities of Kirchberg and Wilkau-Haßlau make it clear that they expect further progress on the project. They waited almost two decades for a concrete implementation, which was marked by numerous delays and changes to the original plans. Now it is time for the responsible authorities to finally act to advance this important traffic artery. As the Free press reported, the municipalities have drawn attention to this situation in a public campaign.
But there is not only news from the region on the Rödellbach cycle path. Wilkau-Haßlau has also celebrated great progress in recent years. The station's former reception building was extensively renovated between 2012 and 2022, which is now helping to revitalize local transport. In 2021, 73 meters of narrow-gauge track was laid, and an IV K under steam was seen for the first time since 1973. These events attracted many visitors from near and far Locomotive Report describes. In particular, the organized special bus line that was set up for rail replacement trips from Wilkau-Haßlau to Carlsfeld proved to be in great demand.
Events and transport connections
The town of Wilkau-Haßlau emerged as the main venue where visitors could enjoy numerous activities, including exhibitions, hikes and the opportunity to get to the Schönheide museum railway. A big advantage of the event was that participation was free; a fee only had to be paid for the SEV bus rides and museum train rides. This concept certainly contributed to the event being a great success with a high number of visitors.
While cities continue to fight for progress on the Rödellbach cycle path, the importance of cycle tourism cannot be ignored. The SachsenNetz Wheel promotes this by creating a link with the railway, which allows tourists to plan their cycle tours without returning to the starting point. The train stations that are at the beginning or end of routes are particularly relevant for cycling. It is planned to install information boards that will provide information about cycle tourism offers and make orientation easier.
The transport associations in Saxony are working to coordinate transport tariffs so that cyclists can often take their bikes with them for free in addition to normal tickets, as long as they are monthly ticket holders. These developments could not only boost cycle tourism, but also raise awareness of the need for a well-developed cycle path network.
In short, the Hesse region is facing a crucial time. While older projects such as the Rödellbach cycle path are coming into focus, new tourist and infrastructural offerings are also developing. It remains to be hoped that those responsible will soon take the necessary steps to realize the cycle path and the associated opportunities for local people and visitors.
