Bürgerschachtstraße: Major construction project starts on October 14, 2025!

An extensive road construction project will begin in Zwickau next week, which will affect many drivers and residents. Work on Bürgerschachtstrasse will start from Tuesday, October 14, 2025 - and that's no small feat!

Not only will the asphalt surface layer on both lanes be completely replaced, defective concrete slabs in the track area will also be replaced. In addition, the restoration of the marking is on the plan. A true all-round service for the roads, you could say!

The most important details

The work is divided into a total of four construction phases. Phases 1 and 2 concern the area between Reichenbacher Straße and Stenner Marktsteig, while in phases 3 and 4 the ceiling renewal between Reuterweg and Stenner Marktsteig will be carried out. During this time there will be a partial closure and road users must be prepared for a one-way traffic system in the direction of Reichenbacher Straße. A large-scale diversion via Reichenbacher Straße and Humboldtstraße will be set up for traffic heading towards Lengenfeld.

Unfortunately, there will also be affected stops, including “Am Fuchsgraben”, “bürgerschachtstraße” and “Reichenbacher Straße”, which cannot be served during the construction period.

Technical challenges and solutions

Replacing the asphalt surface is a standard procedure in road renovation, as Wirtgen Group explains. Only the damaged layer is removed so that traffic can flow as much as possible. A proven method for this is cold milling, in which round shank chisels are used on rotating rollers. This allows both asphalt and concrete to be processed efficiently.

In addition, three different methods are used during renovation: from the complete new building process to special surface treatments. The choice of the appropriate procedure depends on the individual damage to the road surface, as Wikipedia reports.

Costs of 450,000 euros were estimated for the entire measures, and VSTR AG from Rodewisch is the responsible company entrusted with the construction. The work is scheduled to be completed at the beginning of December 2025. A major project that will bring many improvements for residents and commuters!
